Pretty sure it does work against most orcs. Maybe not Warriors as they are unmovable which is the same reason it might not work on unholds (haven't tested this myself).

It doesn't work against Unholds and Ijirok. Even if you try to combine with Indomitable to avoid pushback/stun spearwall simply doesn't trigger.
Also spearwall doesn't protect against orc stun if it fails to hit,

Doesn't trigger against Footwork too. Though AI doesn't seem to exploit this much: Webknechts have Footwork yet do run into Spearwalls.

Would a puny spear stop a charging giant?

spears in a phalanx/shieldwall formation have stopped huge armored horses in ancient antiquity

Spearwall works against every enemy (Orcs, Unholds, Barbs, etc) - if it hits. Just like any attack the spear has to hit to drive the enemy back. So no matter how good your guy is there is always at least a 5% chance of missing, even with the added hit bonus that spears provide. If it misses then an Orc Young may stun any Brother he ends up adjacent to, an Unhold will do worse.

Orc Warriors and Warlords can't be knocked back, I think Unholds as well. You can still footwork back and reestablish the spearwall if you want.

I have no idea about the Ijirok.

Yeah, I'm pretty damn sure you can spearwall unholds. Can anybody else confirm?

If I remember right you get the attack but the knock back effect does not happen. Then mebbe the unhold knocks you back and mebbe it doesnt if you dodge the attack it or something. Either way, it won't push it back pretty sure.

Already knocked back an Orc Warrior, but I can't remember if it happened against an Unhold...

Spearwall works against Unholds only when they act intentionally stupid by walking into it instead of using their charge ability (check animation/log to see difference). Against a charging Unhold spearwall does nothing even if you use Indom to negate stun/pushback.

spearwall should counter orc and unhold charges. this makes no sense at all, spears are already very weak. A phalanx should atleast stop charges too

How would a spear stop a giant?!

How would a human stop a massive unhold in the first place? Pretty sure anything less than an army would turn and run with their arses ahead of their bodies.

Spearwall also doesn't receive the +20% hit bonus that spear attacks receive so you need a very high melee attack bro to get into the 95% hit chance range against enemies with good melee defense.

The game models spears, not the longer Macedonian sarissas. The phalanx was made up of overlapping sarissas, 12+ feet in length, with the first 3 rows of spear points overlapping creating a wall. The further ranks held the sarissas up at an angle over the formation to deflect missile weapons. The modeled spearwall is more akin to an infantry square, and if you have every brother on the front line using a spear an shield then the odds of stopping an Orc or Unhold increase due to overlapping coverage.

As mentioned above the spearwall does stop Orcs and Unholds - if they hit, otherwise the enemy closes with the unfortunate Brother.

Pretty sure if a giant charged and impaled itself on a spear it wouldn't be good for a giant. Kind of hard to understand why they don't give those types of situations that benefit, since spears are about the weakest late game weapon. I'd like to see that sort of buff on spears, or at least give it a straight up defensive bonus with the mastery. I use spears early game, but it would be nice if they were viable late game too. I mean historically, they're a very good weapon especially as mentioned against giant charging beasts.
