Best backgrounds for archers?
Obviously the main contender is Hunter. But in my current campaign, I haven't seen a single hunter available yet, besides my starter bro :(

Poachers and Bowyers - haven't had much luck with both. None had any stars in r.atk and their base r.atk sucked.

Poachers are also good. Raiders, sellswords, and retired soldiers are not bad, above average.

Raider and Retired Soldier will have 87 ratk. With 3 stars. That's pretty bad, dunno why you suggesting them.
You cannot be always lucky to find a hunter with three stars. I said that they are not bad. Above average.

Nomads (requires the BD DLC) and Squires can also be pretty good. Nomads have better ranged / melee base stats depending on the weapon type they spawn with.

Nomads have abysmal resolve though. At least the ones I've tried.

87 Ratk sounds perfectly fine to me.

In my current run there was only one hunter and he's dead now, the poachers have had melee stats, and the bowyers are trash.

I have a pretty good Nomad archer, (Ratk 89) my other two archers are a Militiaman (Ratk 85) and a Messenger (Ratk 87). They're all very effective IMO, they just aren't too special at making difficult shots. Compared to more pure archer backgrounds, they often have higher fatigue or hit points and make up for a bit of their lost optimization that way. All three of these guys draw 2H Saifs on anyone that rushes them, two swings plus bleeding, it works really well.

I've also made a decent archer out of a Deserter.

37 is a terrible average, I wouldnt make a ranged bro out of 37 ratack bro even with 3 stars. 50 with 2 stars is a real average you want your ranged bro to be. Ranged units are more of a luxury imo, you'd better find a good recruit for it or not bother.

Ranged units must hit alot, that's literally their only function. IMO ranged bro need to be close to 100rtack by lvl 11 to make it worth the time to raise him. Otherwise I'd rather get another melee bro, better value.

37 is not that bad. You get 45 by three stars and 4 from gifted which make them 86.

I'm making an Xbow bro out of a 38** ratk historian right now. He won't be the ultimate uber sniper but he will be functional. Just saying...

Yes. That will become a good archer, 82 ratk with gifted.

I managed to get a witch hunter with 46**. He should be 90 r.atk with gifted by the end. Is my math correct?

How much did you spend on? They are pretty expensive.
