Help with gladiator start
Hi guys, I've been struggling with the gladiator start, mainly because I'm finding it really difficult to make a decent profit and save money. Do you have any tips?

I'm playing on veteran economy, medium resources and expert combat.

You're trying to expand your powerbase before your economy can support it, you'll struggle achieving anything like that. You should stick to the cheap background fodder at first and only then slowly replace them with better background as your income grows to match the wage.

Aren't they basically made to spam the arena fight? Also, use indebted fodders for the most of early game.

Southern cities pay well, the best way to make money is to farm camps and locations. there is cheaper fodder than indepted.

Just because they're fodder doesn't mean you should waste their lives, fodder with a few early perks and lvlup stats are way more preferable than lv1 fodder with nothing.

Nomad are easy farm before day 40 when they get dodge, but crawling the desert trying to blindly find more location isn't a good idea especially with the gladiators' wages and expensive food requirement.

exactly for that reason you should buy "better" and cheaper fodder. indepted have worse stats that daytaylor but cost 2-3 times more

Where do you consistently find daytaler at 60-100 crown? That's cripple and beggar tier. I tend to find them at 140-200 at the cheapest. Meanwhile indebted are around 200-250 and aside from 10 less average HP the other stats are basically the same. After 10 days of lv1 wages the daytaler get more expensive than indebted, even shorter if they survived some battles and earned a level or two.

Plus, as a fodder the indebted trait is plain better considering that they dont give morale check to non-indebted upon death. You know, to the three gladiators. The core of your team.

lol they average out at about 100. indebted are bout 200-350. after about 20 (that is if they survive that long) days by lvl 8 an average daytaylor becomes more expensive and even better. also 10 hp is not nothing, but quite a lot in the early game. on the top of that gold is more valuable early and as the game progresses it losses value. so an extra 200 gold on day one worth a lot more since you can buy extra 2 daytaylors/rattcachers or whatever.

edit. just had a look at wiki and indepted have -10 hp -5 res and -5 init. in the early game -5 resolve makes quite a difference, so they are over 1.2 full lvl of key stats less than cheaper bros.

I cant find hiring cost information so I'll stop discussing that. Still, even 20 days pass by quickly early on for the wages to weight in. And what does lv8 have to do with anything?

-2.5 resolve average. -5 minimum value, same max roll. That's basically nothing. Only the HP is worth consideration, but it's not a deal breaker.
bulbatrs Oct 31, 2020 @ 11:07pm
in first 20 days minimum of 30 combats expected. chances of survival of cannon fodder are about 20%. maybe you play differently, run around and buy tradegoods with 1 fight in 10 days. yep that way indepted become better by day 100.
A5G_Reaper Oct 31, 2020 @ 11:35pm
If you do a less stellar start then maybe you'll have that kind of death rate, but this is specifically talking about gladiator origins. Those three starting bros are immensely powerful, that the additions are there simply to hold the line and prevent them from getting surrounded. You can expect high survival rate of the fodder, which means levels and wages.

Can you stop with the ludicrous hyperbole? Even with trading focus there should be more than one easy fight to pick in ten entire days. And at the WORST case indebted outpay daytaler in 25 days, not 100.

dude, just admit it, you like indepted for rpg reasons. from cost, stats and potential they are absolute trash comparing to an average background. I'm not even taking into account that there is a chance that you get a good A-team bro out of those backgrounds and that cannot happen with indepted.
A5G_Reaper Nov 1, 2020 @ 5:37am
Attacking me personally now? What does me liking anything had to do with this? I've displayed the math and you constantly reply with increasingly ridiculous (and untrue) hyperbole. Cost wise they're the most effective background you can get in any slightly long period of time. Stats wise they're only lacking in HP to the comparison with minor resolve difference, nowhere near "absolute trash". As for potential beside from inability to take tank and sergeant role there's, oh again, exactly zero difference with your run in the mill daytaler. Their trait list doesn't ban stuff like dexterous, huge, iron lungs - their potential isn't high, but with the right stars and starting rolls it's there.
bulbatrs Nov 1, 2020 @ 6:32am
dude their potential is lvl 7, daytaylor can go lvl 11 and beyond. this argument is pointless, you just love them for no reason as you have provided none outside of some inignificant gold efficiency that happens 20-30 days later half the time or whatever your deathrate.

The only 2 tips that I can give you is to stick on arenas and southern caravan misions on the first days...
I found that the economy gets harder in north

Calm down guys. Just agree to disagree, everyone has their own approach to the game.
