Difficulty scaling and company size.
So, I moved up to expert and... Disaster.

What's the difference between Beginner/Veteran/Expert difficulty scalling as far as party size goes.

Basically, when do do I need to increase the size of my company and by how much?

How about when the difficulty goes up, no matter what, so at that point, you want a max size company. This also includes your backups.

Thanks in advance.

While I can give you no specifics on scaling, what I can say is that the game scales off your 12 chunkiest bois. So reserves only start counting once the frontliners die.

So, 12 frontliners? If I have 5 people in combat and 12 in reserve, the game won't scale up? Isn't there a specific hard day/date when scalling happens regardless?

Your 12 chunkiest, regardless of location. If you have 13 characters, 12 at 10 and 1 at 1; regardless who is in reserve; the game will be scaled to 12x10.

So, if I have 12 lvl 2/3/4/5/whatever, as long as they aren't lvl 10 and above?

No, your 12 highest level brothers. Regardless of all other factors.

Expert difficulty runs on a 1.15x modifier compared to Veteran. Beginner runs on .85x.

All enemies have a numeric strength value assigned to them. Contracts/Camps/etc. have a resource allotment given to them (with some room for variance). This resource allotment is then filled with enemies based on their strength to hit the allotment.

So to simplify things a bit, Expert gives these 15% more resources, which means that more or stronger units will be encountered to fill the higher allotment. There's more going on than just that, but that is the difference between Expert/Veteran. All of the other scaling factors are the same.

Hmm, is there a list that shows this breakdown? SO, If I have a few super powerful bros and the rest are weak trash, I'll face weaker opponents until... When?

Hmm, thanks for the info.

The party strength scaling is thus; each brother has a base value of 8 plus (level) * 2. So a level 1 is worth 10 and a level 6 is worth 20. Generally speaking a level 6 is far more useful than two level 1s so if you feel scaling is giving problems focus on getting stronger brothers over more. Also, equipment doesn't factor into this at all so getting the best gear you can ASAP is important.
Oh, also, this is mainly important for contract scaling, I don't believe locations or random parties use it.

But when does the difficulty spike? How long should I stay with 7 or 8 bros? I'm trying a higher difficulty and I'm not looking for any company wipes.

Also, if I have a bro or two survive and massive wipe, do the enemies scale back down, or will everything be scalled based on my old composition?

There isn't really a difficulty spike timing wise except for a few cases. The difficulty increase over time is linear as far as I understand it, however there are a few day based buffs that certain enemies get. Notable is the day 40 buff to Raiders (+Skill) and Nomads (+Skill and Dodge perk). If your team is weak on day 40 then avoid the desert areas as Nomads get a pretty big boost here.

Some enemies get buffs around day 100 and some around day 200 but by those points you should already have a strong established team and not care very much.

Enemy sizes/difficulty will scale down if your party starts dying, but only for contracts. Overworld and camps do not care.
