They don't even have Cleaver Mastery.
Not sure what "free attacks" you are talking about. There is no such thing unless you are trying to walk out of their zone of control. I'll chalk that one up to ranting.
Being on Beginner doesn't change their tactics or perks, but it does grant you +5 accuracy and avoidance which can help, since they do have high stats.
Anyway, how far is your campaign right now? Savants are a late game enemy with some of the highest stats enemies can have.
Savant AI is highly predictable. They will always warp to the edge of your formation into a 1v1 with your edge bro if there is room to do so. Meaning your 4 edge points (front and back) should have your most durable bros.
Having some Polearm guys, preferably with Mastery for the mobility can help you catch up and smack them as they move around.
If someone gets into trouble then surround the Savant engaging him to encourage it to warp away, and then keep the injured bro in the interior and he wont be targeted. Dogs make great bait for this if needed.
Use Taunt and/or Nets and/or Mace Stuns to control their warping.
If you're "lucky" enough, you can have them at day 10-15 thru the "evil artefact/vampire" events. Happened twice to me when playing Beginner/Beginner: One with 4-6 necrosavants and other with 8-10 Undead + Ancient Honor Guard.
Yeah that was just me ranting a bit, what I was referencing how if they take any action beforehand they can teleport and then immediatly attack afterwards. That and if there accompanied by zombies or skeletons they'll hang back and wait, then after youve done all you can, they'll teleport in and almost get two turns back to back due to thier high initiative.
Im at day 115, already went through a undead invasion, though I mostly had to deal with Legionaries and honour guards. Ive won battles with no casuallties most of the time (though Ill admit I savescum alot) Ive actually gone up against 1-3 savants and came out on top but the reason I wrote this is because I had just had a fight with six of the buggers accompanied by 14 auxilarys, and I missed alot of 70%+ hits. >_<
Ill try a few of the things everyones mentioned, should at least be able to make things bearable.
Also, when you fight necrosavants + some fodder, you might want to use couple turns to regroup into 3 row formation and use some enviroment to protect flanks or other weak spots so they wont get overwhelmed.
I'd use whips, but Ive yet to see one drop from barbarian beastmasters, or be sold in any shop in my map seed, probably just me being horribly unlucky on that front. =/
Also attack during day time. I'm pretty sure thats what makes some spawn weak and half health.
This poped out to me because I need to kill necro's for some dust and cant find any.
This will work, although most folks save their Holy Water for the Black Monolith.
I can't find whips either..... Not sure why not. Bad luck I guess.
Big burly menz...that's a great name for a merc company
