catching the eye of the noble houses I think requires like 1050 reknown.. you could complete that fast potentialy too.
after that go for the noble house thing. It opens the contracts from noble houses, which are a tad tougher but well paid. you want them.
Is this how the game scales your opponents? The More ambitions you complete the tougher your opponents become?
If the above is correct I would rather choose an ambition that I can take my time achieving as I'm worried the opponent strength with these rapid ambition jumps is going to be too much for my current company to deal with?
And also give my fellow brothers in arms a chance to give some advice on the best path to follow as I level them up.

And who of my crew would make a good Sargent when I decide to complete the ambition?
That would be a wasted perk on my pure longbow build on the Witch Hunter.
I choose the Sargent Ambition now, but will hold off completing it until I get a few more good recruits :)

basicaly a sergeant helps your line not break with his resolve in two ways, by using rally, and by holding your banner out. since the banner is a two tile melee weapon, it makes sense for him to be more of a utility polearm build, that guide I linked mentions sergeant in the frequently asked questions section, it says to give him alot of nets.
They're especially good for geists. Other times would be with ancient priests to resist horrify, and to resist the roar of an orc warlord. And if you have frontline guys who aren't confident in battles you're winning, or guys who waver, a banner sergeant with rally is helpful. As a pike the banner is just okay, but having the rest of your team buffed or debuffed is huge. I guess if you really don't have anybody with stars in resolve and good resolve to be a sergeant, it may be better to avoid geists.
