The way I *think* it works (do not quote me on this, or maybe wait for one of the code-savvy regulars to either confirm or correct me) is that every piece of armor gets assigned a random "additional damage" at the end of the battle regardless of its' current state. If this "additional damage" takes it to 0% then it is destroyed and does not show up in the loot screen after battle.
Hence an armor that got reduced to 20% durability during battle is almost guaranteed to disappear, while untouched armor has a *high* (but not 100%) chance to be retrievable.
I base this assumption on the fact that even armors that I know for sure were not touched during battle (most often those belonging to brigand leaders, as they are the easiest to track on a regular basis) can still appear in various states of disrepair in the loot screen.
It *might* be that the "additional damage" percentage gets adjusted with updates but I can't say to have noticed it myself.
Again, do not quote me on that unless somebody can confirm as I do not know the game code.
As a side note the Northern Raiders origin have an unique perk which allows them to loot items in 0% condition after battle. If you feel like tackling the challenge (or browsing for an optimal/"easy" seed for that particular origin, which mostly means having the 1 friendly noble house controlling a sizeable portion of the map) they will quickly reward you with more looted armor than you can reasonably use (repairing 0% armor to sell it is seldom worth it).
Better to give daggers(or even knives in early game) to all brothers, focus on winning the battle, and then use daggers to increase loot.
I use daggers even on raiders, fallen heroes, not only leaders and knights, and it gives some free money.
