How does the paint system work?

I painted one helmet of one of my guy orange and teal, then I saw I had some black paint in my inventory, tried to paint another helmet, but right clicking and dragging the black paint on other helmets didnt work. What am I doing wrong?

It may work in multiple ways, but the only way I've done it is by having a merc selected who is wearing the helmet I want painted, and then right clicking on the paint. Not all helmets can be painted. Uniques can't, and I don't think those red-frilled raider helmets can be painted but not sure.

I also tried non merc helmets, like the 90 durability archer helmets that dont reduce visibility. Could it be black paint?

You cant paint special helmets/hields.

My bad i thought you meant the fangshire helmet - "dont drop visibility".

Apparently light helmets cant be painted either. Not entirely sure which.

apparently, you can only paint northern helms/shields. I can paint round shields or nasal helms just fine, but I am completely unable to paint ANY of the new blazing deserts shields or helms. sad.

(there's a lot of shields/helmets you can't paint, even common ones)
