That being said, retreating from battle IS a legit game mechanic. You get the mood penalty and lose any loot you'd get otherwise when you retreat, so it's not like it's a win-win.
As are whips, get a couple of whips and slap those ghosts in the face.
Better to invest in resolve and a bannerman/sgt.. A whips are also helpful against ghosts. Cleavers are great against undead.
There are a few things people think are exploity, such as dragging in third parties or using the mechanics the game provides which have remained unchanged for years. If the devs thought it was actually an exploit it would have been changed.
Lastly the game isn't going to hold your hand and it will crush your dreams, so don't feel bad about outsmarting it. That said you are losing renown and happiness for every retreat so your solution comes with some problems.
