Got quickhands on my whole front line, and most enemies are really soft when they reach my line!
the spear could change that because its shield dmg so i would assume it always hits? so no ranged skill needed. but then again removing shields is the job of my tanks because they dont have the room to build melee attack -> so axe and split does shields while they tank 3-5 people.
but then again you would need quick hands like ogre said.. and im rly not liking giving up a perk on tanks/zerkers for such minimal gain. and without it you could lose valuable attacks that do heavy dmg (zerker has to swap to 2H) or that would just do more shield dmg (tanks with axe)
With one use (and no ability to restock) I think it should destroy ANY shield outright, kind of how the Roman pila made enemy shields unusable.
Otherwise it needs a stack of 4 or 5 uses, with the ability to get replenished after the battle, just like any other throwing weapon.
It does have 100% accuracy against shields for those that are wondering.
I would use them if they replenished but I can't justify whiffing 100 gold around every battle to pop a shield when it is never going to make an impactful difference on the outcome.
Nets are far more useful and cheaper to buy, and I don't even use those that much.
As for throwing builds in general, I built a Xbow/Polearm/Thrower hybrid which is pretty fun. Use Xbow at start and then Polearm/Javelin when the enemy reaches you. With Polearm spec you can polearm, QH and throw Javelin in the same turn which is neat.
I used this build pre dlc as well with the goblin pike instead but since polearm mastery is awesome now the build can use billhook.
I'd be fine if they made them ranged weapons with 1/1 ammo, cost at least 5 to replenish and if necessary, up the fatigue penalty to make carrying them a burden.
I don't like the new spear, probably because I don't break shields other than Schrats. That said, I've had a crossbow/throwing weapon specialist just prior to the patch who outperformed my regular warbow guys, including the one who had higher ranged attack than him (and all of them had higher ranged defense).
With the perk, the old throwing spears penetrate almost as well as crossbows at 2-range and one-shot goblins. With berserk that meant I could get 3 injuring or fatal shots each turn. With the perk, the crossbow is more accurate than aimed shot against dodgy characters like master archers and hurts them more when it hits. Damn did he use a lot of ammo though. And he had more fatigue than that pre-DLC given the bags nerf.
