My group's pretty decent because I lucked out with decently talented guys right out the gate. As I started acquiring funds, I found 3 good sellswords, a good raider, and finally a good hedger. But, when I felt like I wanted to start phasing in more high-priced guys like sellswords etc to replace the so-so types (like farmers), I found only high-priced junk. It's just RNG is all.
If you find yourself unable to find your heavy hitters, my guess is that you'll just have to wait it out. I'm only on my second play thru at 200 plus days and can't say with any authority what's wrong, if anything. But let me say this: In the mean time, (if you have bookoo bucks) try to find caravans that are heading to a city where there is a weapon and/or armor store. The equally ellusive special items you may find will come in handy for the guys you're waiting on when you finally get them.
The best mercs tend to spawn from cities with barracks. Hire and fire method may helps in case of bad luck.
You don't need those backgrounds for heavy hitters. In fact they're likely to be farmers, brawlers, wildmen, etc. because you can hire like 100 of them per hedge knight, so they will be better than the average hedge knight due to good star placement. Just as long as he can get above 80 melee, 30 melee defense, 120 fatigue, and 55 or so resolve, and 80ish hp, especially without collosus and fortified mind should be endgame material.
I will say that the best 2h guy possible would be a hedge knight, but it's not economically feasible enough to hire enough hedge knight to make that happen in most playthroughs. I was lucky enough to hire a hedge knight with 2 stars in melee attack, but he has no stars in melee defense so my best farmer 2h guy will be better than him. Will fire him if his defense rolls aren't good.
Good question. I'll have to scout around a bit and pay some more attention to the barracks. One thing that may be hurting me is that I looted one kingdom pretty badly on this run, so a few of their cities are currently off limits to me.
You may be right. I scouted around further, and there's only one city with a barracks, and I have unfortunately pillaged the crap out of them, so am unwelcome. It very well may be time to hang up the banner and start over.
