Can't find any better bros
So I'm around Day 190. Just wrapped up the second crisis. The majority of my team is now level 12 or higher, with only a couple of newer guys catching up. I'm pretty happy that during this run I've been able to keep my team alive and have built up some really nice bros from humble backgrounds. I think I have one retired soldier, one sellsword, and one raider. They are pretty much the top starting classes I have.

But for this team to really improve I need some heavy hitters, and I just can't find any. I don't know if it's my map seed or what, but the towns never have any sellswords, swordmasters or hedge knights. I'm not even seeing any adventurous nobles. Every once in a while I check out a hunter or two, but they're never better than my witch hunters.

Anyone else run into this problem? Any ideas for producing better potential recruits?

Quality definitely increase with time (and maybe renown?) but at day 190 you should be seeing hedge knights in cities at least occassionally. Whether theyre good or not is a different story. My current expert game I am wrapping up second crisis and still have a dayteller and fisherman as spearmen because the quality classes I find stink.

Yeah, in previous games I never had this problem finding quality candidates. This time I have plenty of coin ready to spend and no one worth spending it on!

Could it be... <gasp> RNG?!

My group's pretty decent because I lucked out with decently talented guys right out the gate. As I started acquiring funds, I found 3 good sellswords, a good raider, and finally a good hedger. But, when I felt like I wanted to start phasing in more high-priced guys like sellswords etc to replace the so-so types (like farmers), I found only high-priced junk. It's just RNG is all.

If you find yourself unable to find your heavy hitters, my guess is that you'll just have to wait it out. I'm only on my second play thru at 200 plus days and can't say with any authority what's wrong, if anything. But let me say this: In the mean time, (if you have bookoo bucks) try to find caravans that are heading to a city where there is a weapon and/or armor store. The equally ellusive special items you may find will come in handy for the guys you're waiting on when you finally get them.

How many barracks are in you map seed?
The best mercs tend to spawn from cities with barracks. Hire and fire method may helps in case of bad luck.

You don't need those backgrounds for heavy hitters. In fact they're likely to be farmers, brawlers, wildmen, etc. because you can hire like 100 of them per hedge knight, so they will be better than the average hedge knight due to good star placement. Just as long as he can get above 80 melee, 30 melee defense, 120 fatigue, and 55 or so resolve, and 80ish hp, especially without collosus and fortified mind should be endgame material.

I will say that the best 2h guy possible would be a hedge knight, but it's not economically feasible enough to hire enough hedge knight to make that happen in most playthroughs. I was lucky enough to hire a hedge knight with 2 stars in melee attack, but he has no stars in melee defense so my best farmer 2h guy will be better than him. Will fire him if his defense rolls aren't good.

Good question. I'll have to scout around a bit and pay some more attention to the barracks. One thing that may be hurting me is that I looted one kingdom pretty badly on this run, so a few of their cities are currently off limits to me.
Time to start a new adventure!

You may be right. I scouted around further, and there's only one city with a barracks, and I have unfortunately pillaged the crap out of them, so am unwelcome. It very well may be time to hang up the banner and start over.
