The more cities that you have allied, the better your recruit choices, repair prices, and market availability. Especially if they get 'debuffed' with the Ambushed Trade Routes (in which case you can make crazy sales there).
Playing as a 'bandit' is gimmicky at best, and shouldn't be done unless you know what you're doing. Especially mid/late game, where you burn through repair tools at an incredibly fast rate. Having to trek across the map because you angered nearby settlements is never fun.
I robbed 2 sellswords comopany early and got 1 set of coat of plates and 1 warbow before ~ day 50 (almost got a second set of coat of plates, but it didn't drop). You decide if it's worth it.
Both times we helped them against brigands and then robbed the last 2-3 mercenaries.
Be careful and don't attack companies that are hired by big towns and noble houses.
Edit: playing on expert
They can be insanely well armored and have very high stats, not to mention that they occasionally come with hedge knights, swordmasters and master archers.
Imho, not worth it.
