Night time penalty to range, to much?
Whenever its night time, non of my archers can hit for ♥♥♥♥ to save their ass.
with a minimum of 5% hit chance even my most skilled archers cant hit for ♥♥♥♥.

the penalty of -30% is extremely high, is there a way to mittigate this?

yh there is actually....fight at daytime xD

It goes both ways and can be helpful if you need to assault an enemy with lots of ranged units.

The thing I don't understand is why Goblins get lower range skill at night rather than day. I have always thought that Goblins should get normal skill at night and lower skill during day.

Most of the time you can control if you are fighting at night or day, so you can choose to enter those night battles with less archers or make sure your archers have weapon options.

The problem is that if they lower the penalty too much then it means that people that are relying on night time to assault ranged units no longer have the option.

The penalty does provide the player with strategies and choices... lowering it would remove some of the player agency.

Seriously tho, if its not some caravan ambush I always just wait a bit night is short anyway...and you know how it goes, night is dark and full of terrors. Unless you fight goblins, only fight those little ♥♥♥♥♥ under moonlight.

The reality is that you are likely just using low level inexperienced archers. High level archers do pretty well at night as there is also a reduction in ranged defence.

Back in my day, night time reduction to ranged was 50%! Ungrateful whipper snappers.

Uphill, both ways!
It seems fairly realistic, have you ever been to the woods at night, where there's no light pollution? It's pretty much pitch black, granted, being in the dark for a while does let your eyes adjust to the darkness, but it'd still be pretty hard to hit a target that's a reasonable distance away.

Consider switching your bowmen to crossbows for night battles. They won't benefit from the mastery, but they will benefit from the additional +10 ranged skill granted by crossbows. As your vision is reduced by 2 tiles at night anyways, you're not going to be shooting past 6 hexes as it is unless you're on an elevation.

Fangshire warbow at night is vicious on enemy ranged.

Unless people buy the Supporter edition they won't have that helm but yeah in the hands of a War Bow or named War Bow user, it's deadly at night. For the other mercs who are archers, switching to crossbows for night fighting should help with accuracy.

Yep. Also just spraying into crowds can work too. I swear high-skill archers are more likely to hit something else when they miss.
Like those times your high skill archer kills 2 people and wounds a third, none of which are the target you told him to hit.

I don't quite sure, as the penalty is -30% range skill and -30% range defense, which is like -30% to hit chance, unless the bonus from shields not affected.
If the shield and perk defense bonus aren't affected, the nighttime penalty is surely huge.

rofl. 30 is just a small obstacle to hit chance. It was -50 before and you still had decen chance to land few hits

Everything is affected. Not sure about Dodge though. As someone said earlier it was -50% to RA without penalizing RD during EA. Noone complained, it was exactly the opposite: everyone praised it and tried to use night time to fight range superior enemy
