Has there been an update to RPG Maker, or have you updated your audio software in the time that the problem started?
Also what scripts are you using?
The fact that the sound doesn't work in play test & audio file selection, but does work during play testing is odd. However, the fact that these problems arose within the same time frame as you introducing these scripts, makes me inclined to think you're too quick to rule them out. Did you transfer over the scripts to the new project as well?
The same way you check pitch & pan.
Check the logs of your system for update actions to make sure.
If you don't see any occuring within the time frame, check to see if any updates to your audio software are available.
If that doesn't work, uninstall & then reinstall RPG Maker MV. It has a tendency to shake loose quirks like this.
On Windows, just click the volume icon on the taskbar, then click Mixer. Double-check that MV's volume is set to something audible and isn't muted. As mentioned, the editor and game are run separately and have separate volume settings.
