RPG MV for RPG games
Pixel for platform games.

Although I don't really like Pixel, I prefer another platform like construct 3 or Godot
making an RPG game on any other platform than RPG maker is quite difficult, even for many, impossible.
Godot is for users with programming knowledge and Construct 3 does not require them at the beginning but the more you advance you will need a lot of mathematics.
If you are not very good with either use game maker MV
you can try the demo and see if you like it.
and if you want to make an RPG , RPG maker MV is a win :happydodo:

They are pretty different products and the interface and general workflow between them is very different.

Pixel Game Maker MV is a more advanced engine and has a somewhat higher learning curve (though it's still very low compared to others and there are a bunch of tutorials), but it's also more versatile and has a lot of advanced functions like gravity, local multiplayer, particle editor (RPG Maker MV doesn't have one, but MZ sorta does with Effekseer) and much better (but somewhat less intuitive) way of handling game assets like tiles etc. In Pixel Game Maker, you can choose between different multiple tile sizes for your game, in RPG Maker MV, you are limited to 48x48 tile size. Pixel Game Maker MV is focused on action games, but it has a larger versatility than RPG Maker MV even with plugins. You probably could make a typical RPG Maker game much more easily in Pixel Game Maker than vice versa (although I wouldn't recommend it). The engine is only 2-3 years old though and the community isn't as big as around RPG Maker, though there is still a sizeable one and it appears to be growing recently. But don't expect to find nearly as many plugins for it as for RPG Maker. It also only has a Windows export atm, but they are also planning to implement an export for Nintendo Switch.

RPG Maker MV is much easier to get into, but more restrictive, atleast at base. You'll notice that especially with art assets. A lot more plugins and community engagement though, atleast for now. Though plugin releases have slowed down ever since MZ released and a lot of plugin creators seem to be switching to MZ. Still, it's 5 years old, so there's a sizeable library of them. RPG Maker is also more user friendly and easy to use and if you are looking to make games focused on story and dialogues, it's probably the better one out of the two. And has a bunch of features Pixel Game Maker doesn't have, like more export options (Browser, Linux, Mac, Android/iOS) and mouse support (really hope Pixel Game Maker adds this someday). If price is not an issue, I'd recommend you to purchase RPG Maker MZ instead of MV, since MZ is the latest version that currently receives the majority of support from the developer.

If you want to make some sort of action game, like a platformer, a space shooter or anything involving heavy use of physics, then Pixel Game Maker is the better choice. If you want to make a typical 2D JRPG or something more focused on story than action mechanics (like horror games, RPG Maker is famous for them), then RPG Maker. If you don't know yet, I'd suggest you start out with RPG Maker, probably MZ, but MV isn't that different.
