You do realize the offline version is like that too. The code is reusable. And even if Steam can do that I'll get a Steam copy when I buy the offline version.
1. you get Steam's refund policy.
2. depending on your region, you'll get a lower price.
3. you may have an easier or more convenient time paying Steam than paying RPGMakerWeb. Steam but not the devs may directly accept your credit card. You may have a Steam balance that you can use. You may have saved credit information that you'd prefer not to dig out.
Personally, it was slightly more convenient for me to purchase through Steam, and when I heard that the web version had this advantage, my reaction was "whatever, if I ever need a non-Steam version, two years from now, I'll just buy it again."
One version is steam-based, the other is not. . .is that about the gist of it? Is there DRM in the steam version and not the non-steam?
Steam is pretty much a type of DRM by itself.
The difference is: If you buy it from the website you get a key which you can use for a downloaded version as a licensed key and as activation key for the steam version. So some people seem to be upset because they don't get that extra copy of the exact same thing which is anyway just for your personal use (and as it basically is the same license it isn't even a additional copy but 2 ways to use it).
That's it. I don't understand the upset. It's the same other publishers use to do (like you get a extra DRM free copy on most of the games on humble bundle for example) and it's fine for me. It's normal and the publishers even benefit from it. I am going to preorder it from the website, even through I might just use the steam version.
You can not log in into steam at the same time with 2 identical accounts.
Also you will not get steam workshop working one 1 copy if 1 is in offline mode.
Also if implemented all workshop contend that got downloaded previously will only be aviable while you are connected.
An extension of #3: If you're paranoid and don't want to buy things online with a credit card (or otherwise can't buy things online with a credit card), you can go and buy a Steam Card with cash at your local Walmart/Gamestop/wherever
Okay, so buy it from the company directly, and not from Steam. What is the issue? If you buy from Steam, expect Steam to be required to use it... That's the entire point.
If you want to use it without Steam, buy from their Web site...
I don't see the issue? You have a choice.
I'm sure if you made a game and were making thousands in revenue and someone decided to do an audit, they probably aren't going to say "well, you used it on two different machines while only purchasing one license so we're going to have to sue you"
Oh wait...there are other companies that have these kinds of hardware limitations...
