Best way to create this kind of sprite art/animation with gimp?

I'm not a huge fan of the chibi sprites, so I'd like to create sprites that actually resemble my characters like the ones from this suikoden game.

There are also a few recruitable characters that "would" have a "unite" type of attack like in this game since they're familiar with each other, etc. Though, I've never made animations before, so not sure if gimp is the best choice to do that?

Also not sure if "unite" attacks are even possible atm, even with plugins, I just realized.

I suggest Spriter Pro for 2d video games animations you can also give a try to Aseprite (if you only plan pixel art).

Its oldschool Pixel Art of it finest :) Suikodden 1 and 2 are great Games, damn i dont own em anymore cant remember half of the 2or more player combos and even some of the Chars on Screen i seem to never had found. Yeah that Game got plenty of stuff you could miss if you dont concentrate on finding all the Heroes which you not need to end the game.

Sorry about the late reply. I'll look into those after I see how gimp works first to see what's more
effective time-wise. I will eventually create sprites like that, just not sure how long it'll take. >_<
