I am literally placing them standing in the middle of the wall for them to appear more than halfway up the floor
It is all images! Images of walls in the back, images of floors in the back too and images of enemies drawn in front of the background images.
The battlebacks in the game do not fully align with how they are showing in the database troop view, as explained in the resource standards. This has no bearing on the placement of the enemies.

I don't know what you're trying to prove at this point.. you answered the question, I thank you for that, but telling me I'm exaggerating when your own statement shows that I'm not isn't doing much beyond getting one or both of us annoyed.
Create yourself an alignment frame for the background in the troop window. Just a couple of lines is all it takes. A bit tedious while you make it but it makes it so much ever after.
