How do you give foot steps sound effects?

I've been trying ways for the character's foot steps sound effects with different sounds for each tile, like in Yume Nikki, but I'm not sure how to do that effectively or without coding

Yanfly has a step sounds plugin that can accomplish that - I believe you can use the regional tiles to set up different sounds for different areas of a map as the character walks. I've used it in a basic sense and it seems fairly stable. The only way around using his plugin that comes to mind for me would be to still use regional tiles but somehow link that region to a common event that would play certain sound effects when stepped on, but I am not sure how much lag would occur with the common event activating over and over again as the player walked.
