Working on project from multiple locations
Has anyone had any experience working on a RPG MAKER MV project from multiple locations via steam?

I will be doing this, and initially was thinking I would just upload my local files to google drive when done at one location and then download them again from the other location, rinse repeat.

But maybe there is a smarter way?

Just wondering if anyone has any procedures/best practices for working in this manner.

Thanks.

I've no first-hand experience of doing this with RMMV (other than restoring backups), but...

Sounds good. Just make sure the backup/sync bit isn't allowed to occur while you're actually editing the project in RMMV, or chunks of your project may get deleted unexpectedly due to the way RMMV accesses data. D=

Another possibility (my personal preference) is to use physical media, e.g. a memory stick. No reliance on third parties or internet access, faster transfer, and the nice sense of a tangible object to associate with the project (I admit this last one might just be me). ^_^

If you use dropboc, with dropbax installed on your windows on ceveral PC's, you can just open it, edit it and save it right in dropbox, that way you don't have to keep down- and uploading.

Warning though, if you work at 1 project on 2 places at the same time, you will have a problem. Always save on your current location, and shut it off, before opening it on another location, or you will lose work.

So on this I am reading everywhere to just turn steam auto back-up off for RM, due to peoples projects being creamed. Which means this would be a non-issue right? Is that still good practice (or even what you meant)?

Totally viable and a method I used to employ exclusively. However, as it turned out I would somehow always end up forgetting said media stick every time I was just getting ready to pump some good hours into a project from another location, so I sort of switched over to the cloud.

Good note, and something I will most assuredly mess up a few times. TY.

Your Steam Cloud Space is Limited...keep an eye on that. I dont know how big it is.
Maybe around 1GB.

I'm hoping to bypass that all together with google drive or dropbox

RMMV doesn't offer a Steam Cloud allocation, does it? Unless you mean uploading as a private item on Steam Workshop or something. What I was getting at is stuff like this: https://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?threads/problems-with-onedrive.88673/#post-807623

Basically, just make sure RMMV is closed before you start copying things over, and you should be OK, no matter what backup method you use. =)

Oh, yes, that's the drawback. x)

Not sure, Hajami brought up "Steam Cloud Space" - I was asking if turning off auto-updates will prevent the problem you raised about syncing while working.

The years haven't been kind to the old hard drive if you know what I mean :)

Dropbox is 2gb, but if you're smart, you only put in your work folder, the assets you really actually use.

This way, used assets will not affect your storage limit. It is also a good idea to keep your eye on the final amouth of MB's and files, if you want to host your game online. If you want to use Itch, for example, you can not bypass 100 files.

Oh here is a hint... Your game runs perfectly fine on windows without the .M4A files. So, if you bypass the 500 files, you might want to delete those. I am not sure, but this might mute the game when it is played on android. (Mine is muted on android and this would be the most logical explaination) it rund very smooth on android though, without the sound. (I'm still talking about if hosted on itch, played without download.)

Oh, right! Keeping Steam Client auto-updates on should be fine because the program won't update while you're using it. It's best to sync your project's files manually, but that'll be through Google Drive or whatever. =)

That said, you may want to keep Steam's auto-updates turned off for RMMV: it will still update if necessary when you launch it through Steam, but this way you're much less likely to miss the fact that it was updated, and you can check the recent announcements to see if there's anything about compatibility or updating old projects, etc.
