What resolution and size to create custom half-body/bust character portraits?
I've been trying to create custom characters in photoshop and I wanted to ask what resolution and size do I use for a bust portrait, meaning that instead of showing just a small face of the characer in the dialogue box, I want my game to show a half-body portrait of the character behind the dialogue box. (like visual novel style) For those who have created games with half-body graphics, do you guys know what resolution and size should I use for drawing the characters?
If it matters, I am planning for my characters to cover around 3/4 of the screen size in vertical height, and 1/4 of the screen in horizontal length, although I'm very flexible about this as long as the presentation doesn't look weird.

Well, you could of course start by just taking the material that already comes with he program and look at it. Maybe even put it on the screen to see how it fits and work from there. Is that too difficult nowadays?

start with something high resolution then figure out how to fit them into your game by trial and error

For reference the default screen resolution is 816 x 624 px and tile size is 48 x 48 px.
For further reference, the program brings with it busts of various sizes that could give a hint if one were so inclined as to look at them.

I guess I'll try with a high resolution paper. I think photoshop does not alllow you to change the resolution without losing image quality, hence why I asked this as I do not want to spend so much time creating characters only to redraw them again. Hope your suggestion works
Draw the bust. Screenshot game window, paste that in photoshop. Paste in bust image over that. See what size looks nice before even having to save the file.

Definitely always draw way larger than the final will be, unless using pixel art. Save a copy of the large art in case you need it for something later.
