The game gets harder as you progress into further episodes. The episodes are not created equally. That's just how they made it.
Your assessment on cooldown reduction is correct, though. Yellow gems are terrible. You should definitely be doing blues and reds. Greens are useful to reach a certain threshold.
way harder for a 1% damage increase. You ever played Darktide? That game has toxic progression.
Anyway, I think the grind is a bit too long, as well. They did actually lower the costs to upgrade items and perks by about 90% in the last update. So, maybe we'll see gold costs reduced across the board.
1. Upgrade hoarder's boots to orange quality (at the little bird guy in town). When you get hoarder's boots, it will probably be purple or orange quality, rather than green. Levels 7-9 have 2 guaranteed boot pickups, so there is a good chance of getting hoarder's boots there. That small investment will turn a large profit over time.
2. Don't buy anything. Sell items you come across. You can drop multiple things on the selling altars and sell them all at once.
3. There are secrets in the maps with significant gold drops. For example, in the castle, there is a room that is shaped like a square ring with a pit in the middle. If you look into that pit, there's actually a balcony you can land on. A lot of secrets involve dropping into holes. Some secrets are also up high, they might need a double jump or teleport.
4. When you die, you keep what you found. This is good, encouraging design, because you can play high difficulties and progress, even if you lose. When you play the high difficulties, you get better gem drops, too.
So, having a max upgraded weapon is the most important thing. Having maxed out gems is also a big difference, since 1 gem is 50 atk/def or +15 atk/def from the previous tier. Having maxed out items is super cheap and increases your overall power gains. The perks are maybe the least important element, and could be considered optional, since it's rare to get past tier 2 in anything.
You should be nearly maxed out before tackling Mythic 3 end game. Items and perks are optional, but they are dirt cheap after the latest update. Might as well get them.
I usually solo, agreed on maxed weapons (easiest to get), Gems I tend to go for energy and energy recharge rate. Playing on the harder difficulty levels also help with gem progression as you have a chance at finding better tier gems. Still didn't need to max them out. I'm also less afraid of glass canon than I used to be. I haven't had the chance to try vampiric + the damage bonus that also costs health yet (seems like shrines and things tend to show up less as you get farther into things).
Might be some play style differences here- I tend to be cautious and hole up in a relatively safe spot trying to pick mobs off as they approach while other people seem to charge in and actively hunt them down often taking a beating in the process. They also block my shots.
The city click on the buildings- The sun disk then constellation for stats.
