Your ships can actually get amazing range. Beyond Visual Range combat against orks is entirely possible. Remember that escorts cannot be Taunted, and can safely be used as spotters. You could wipe out an ork fleet with 15k lances if you were patient enough.
My general idea is that in order to have a good Imp fleet nowadays, you need speed and range. You need to be fast enough to get into knife-fight range with chaos, amd fast enough and long-ranged enough to kite orks.
I've taken the Armour Piercing upgrade off of every single one of my ships, and replaced it with a range upgrade. All my ships also have the speed buff and combustion bar increase.
Of course, all of this only applies to Cruiser Clash where you have the luxury of infinite time. I still have little idea how to beat them in other missions.
