The penalty of being a loser.
In general, noone likes having stuff taken away from them even if it is temporarily. In this game if a ship gets destroyed or heavily damaged it is out of comission unless you spend reknown and sometimes your crew won't get experience for one game. For whatever reason if you end up losing alot your whole fleet can be out and the game will give you substitute ships until you get some of yours back to fill in the gap.

Before World of Warcraft, there was Everquest. Everquest punished you heavily at high levels when you died, causing you to play for hours to get back the experience you lost from a death. And if you kept dying it could take you a good day to get that experience back. However when you got to the endgame you knew those people knew what they were doing, and could trust them to play well. With World of Warcraft there was never a penalty so hitting max level didn't mean anything about your capability.

I like a little penalty myself. It means every battle you want play to your best to win and there is incentive to learn, every game. I make more works but I trust we are all old enough to understand what I am saying. One or two games is such a small penalty it is insignificant. I KNOW IT IS A DIFFERENT TYPE OF GAME, but in EVE online if you lose your ship, you LOSE your ship.
For fun I just did a quick google. One player's ship was destroyed in EVE online, and since you can buy currency in that game and the ships are gone when they are destroyed the ships have real world value. The ship was worth $11,000. One epic space battle awhile back cost a total of $300,000 in ship value.
I can live with one or two games for repairs thanks.

Just to point out, it says 'day(s)', but what it actually means is turns; that ship has to sit out a number of games equal to the days in repair. So just hop into another game and bulk out your fleet with some escorts or pay the renown cost to get it repaired fast.

At maxed level I find myself increasingly bored and just spend renown to fix broken ships, cuz Renown does grow on trees. Still have 1580 Renown after putting Favour on Despoiler and 2 Styx.

Edited for clarity. Days to games.

That's all? I'm sitting at over 8700 renown right now on my chaos admiral, and all of his ships are fully upgraded and marked.

How dare you not be rewarded for losing.

This is modern vidya!

Warp them out before they die, if you care about that particular ship. It really is that easy.

It is almost always objectively better to take a loss than to win and lose a ship in the process.
