Boarding has 2 chances to breach and do it effects (It can fail twice, succeed twice or succeed once) and can go trough void shields. Lightning strike has 1 chance and cant go trough void shields.

boarding is 2-4 chances depending on ship class (2 for LC 3 for cruiser and BC and 4 for BB)
Lightning strike is 1 all around

Boarding is affected by number of turrets on enemy ship
Lightning strike is not

Also Lightning strike cannot work on ships with shields
Boarding parties don't give a ♥♥♥♥ either way

bording torpedoes can be shot down by turret fire afaik
checking tooltips

ah ya i think only orks have boarding torpedoes? i could be wrong since atm they are the only race i've seen use them.

besides range the following from what I know

boarding can go through shields
you get 2 "assault actions" with a normal boarding (I do believe you get a +1 from space marines favor)
you only get 1 "assault action" with a normal lightning strike (this is upgradable both with the teleportanium skill which gives +1, and another +1 can come from space marines favor)

Also I do believe the boarding ships can be shot by defense turrets lowering your success rates (and I believe shields also has an effect on success rates), so its best to not use boarding actions when ships are clumped close together.

chaos and imp use bording torpedoes aswell
there are not many ways of getting someone across the gap between 2 ships ^^

also another difference is the location they are "bound" to, lightning strike needs a shield generator to operate
boarding needs your ship not to be heavily damaged

i think you are confusing boarding torpedoes with something else
or what i'm thinking of and you are thinking of are both named the same

i'm talking about the torpedoes the orks used on the 3rd mission in campaign. since instead of dealing damage on impact that act like an assault shuttle from a carrier and do a boarding action

i am pretty sure that is what they are called, maybe orcs have longrange boarding torpedoes?

"Boarding Torpedoes are a cross between a torpedo and an assault boat that are used by many of the starfaring races. Instead of a large explosive, they deliver raiders into an enemy starship's interior." according to warhammer wikia

The biggest difference obviously is range, but Lightning Strike needs the shields to be down for maximum effect.

for maximum effect? you cannot use it on shields ^^

Boarding for doing alot of damage and crits and lighting strike for specific targeting of the most prevailant systems on the ship. For example. Ship tries to warp out, lighting strike can cancel warp outs.

The small assault craft used for regular boarding actions are NOT boarding torpedoes, which are currently an Ork-exclusive weapon. Given the prevalence of Space Marine use of boarding torpedoes, I'd expect them to get that option as well. Both Imperial and Chaos ships are meant to have them as an option as well, but it seems unlikely that they'll be used as such.

As for the actual question, I think it's been covered well, except nobody's mentioned the obvious one: Boarding has limited broadside-only range, while lightning strikes can be launched from further away, and in a full 360 degree radius around your ship.

Ork ships have two Launch Torpedo buttons - one launches a normal one, while the other is a boarding torpedo.

These are different to the short-ranged boarding shuttles used for the Boarding Action ability.

Boarding has more action compared to lightning strike. Maximum Lightning strike has 3 actions, boarding has 5 through favour and upgrade. Lightning Strike requires shield down but has longer range and 360 NO SCOPE while Boarding is shorter and 90 degree only. Apart from that they are the same thing, boarding CAN NOT be shot down.

In short, LC for Lightning strike upgrade, BC and BS for boarding.
