Ship size lore question
So bit random, but does anyone know why in 40K (Lore wise) the ships are so massive? Every race just happened to make 5km long battleships? 5km seems rather excessive to be honest.

Not hating, love 40K but never quite got that.

The Warp being what it is, these ships have to be able to operate independently for extended periods and that takes room for supplies. Furthermore with the Imperial Navy relying on manual labor more than automated systems you need quarters for the massive crews, the guns are absolutely ginormous, and so forth..

Because everything must be big an scary in the grim darkness of the future. Also your thinking too small, your average 40k battleship is 10-15km long. some of the more famous battleships are 15 to 20km in length, If you count the abyss class battleships and the phalanx of the imperial fists their even larger. 5km is either a light cruiser or frigate if I'm not mistaken.

its a shame the game does not give you the sense of how awesome and massive these ships are

No, Cruisers are 5km. Battleships are 10+
Light Cruisers are about 4km
Escorts go between 1-3km

That's the wrong picture.

40k is a thirty year old franchise that's seen a lot of writers with a variable grasp of how numbers work. Writers will just put down whatever they think is impressive, there really isn't a hard-and-fast size to these things, other than them being some number of kilometers.

"7. Everythings seven."
"But sir, I'm not sure..."
"Dammit I said 7!"

Imagine if they had put in the world engine lmao, want something whose shields are so strong nothing the imperium threw at it could penn it, and i find the lack of Necron ships in that picture disturbing.

Nah, same as above. In Horus Heresy novels from Black Library the sizes from Kadaeux post were stated.

So it will be more like this:

So will someone clarify what exactly are the dimensions of these ships? Some say 8k, some say 5k and some even say 10km.
As of right now I going with these images:

https://i.warosu.org/data/tg/img/0356/99/1414040396935.jpg;
that puts the Battleship at 5,6km, witch i find reasonable, ridiculously big but reasonable, and what I originaly thought because of a source I no longer remeber, maybe a friend.

that puts the Battleship at 7.1km but here the Dauntless looks disporpotionate

I've been trying to make measurements in game and it's seems the dauntless is about half a Emperor witch maches the first picture but still assuming a unit=1m so 3000 units is 3km, the ships in the game actualy look smaller that. If units= 1mile then I have difficulty measure it since I'm european and don't use that sistem.
The 40k wiki doesn't have stats stating the size of the ships expept for the Gloriana witch says the smallest is 20k and the largest 26k.
So witch source is correct? Or do the writes just don't give it so they can change it at any time?

Lastly I will say I'm a Star Wars fan first and a 40k fan second so that's where my bias gravitates throwards but I feel like the 40k fans like to take the already ridiculously OP and Overkill universe and make it even more ridiculous when discribing it. I once seen a discussion where a 40k fan assumed the executor ssd was 12-14km long (when it is actually 19km) and most Imperium ships where between 15km-30km long.

Did you just necro this thread?
