Your mileage may vary and I've heard some people saying that it's not Tabletop enough. But for me, this is a perfect mix.
Be sure to play in single-player Skirmish mode, first, as there you will learn how the ships and missions work. I also recommend playing the campaign at least on Hard difficulty or higher. I played through on Normal and the game got earlier near the end, though was still tough to play.
It's OK to lose battles in the BFGA campaign, as losing one battle isn't the end. However you should always strive to win more than you lose, of course.
Glad to hear you like Leviathan. Perhaps I'll try that out this weekend.
They tried to take a lot of different things directly from the TT like a lot of the ships (with some exceptions, and different point values ) and the principle kind of their weaponary. There they just tune the numbers a little bit to generate a more "fluent" gamplay. There also are no restrictions for the fleet composition anymore.
They also kept all the special orders (just "disconnectet AAF/CTNH and BR from the others) but made them far less important/potent compared to the TT.
This, as well as the automatisation of the attaccraft and weapons takes out a signifikant part of the tactical charakteristics.
Instead of this they added aspects of sensors and detection/identification of ships wich adds some tactical possibilities.
They also have a set of abilities and upgrades you can choose for your ships, which is somehow good, because you can personalize your ships, but somehow it works against some things one is used to from the TT (instnat ship replacment per micro warp jump or bombs you can place annywhere in a certain radius)
The main difference may be the much higher manouverability (except eldar) of the ships. It is much easier to get your ships wherever you want. (or change a once choosen direction).
Concerning the scenarios, they vary quite a lot from those of the TT. But this is -due to my opinion- quite ok, for some of them (like planetary assault or exterminatus) would not fit for the setting.
Soooo, jea, concerning a lot of things it has it's similarity to the TT but on some point it does not get the feeling from the TT. (at least due to my opinnion)
