except escorts, or maybe a LC targetted by a large amount of unnoticed tau mantas
what faction are you playing? in campaign? vs what faction? how big is the battle?
most factions have a very distinct playstyle so most advice needs more info to really help
detection is a large part of the game, make use of gas clouds and running silent and dont boost unless your ships have emmision dissipators, combine that with some scanning skills (or a widowmaker for imperials) and you can usually kill before they can even break voids
maybe add me as a friend, i can give some advice in 2vai skirmish games
Looking at its stats is slow squishy and got low range.
they have a bit of extra bonus to defence vs macros to make them slightly more survivable
but in that mission you are supposed to lose your firestorm, its still a tutorial, its supposed to teach you about insubordination when ships die
loosing escorts will not cost you, they need no repairs and dont earn upgrades trough surviving
keep your line ships alive, escorts are disposable
especially the firestorm is disposable, the sword can be kept back especially with a lance range upgrade behind your lineships and they can bodyblock most of the damage
cobras are also disposable, but with torps, that are infinite range so can be made to survive
widowmakers never need to get closer then 9k so should be pretty survivable with a running silent order and emmision dissipators
but dont worry too much, they are disposanble, usually used as probes that dont need a skill
but i have been able to make it survive, you just need to bodyblock their cruiser, get out of its detection range while still in the cloud and tell it to go to the other side of the map and hide
its going to cost your LC's but its doable
and its not really no reason, the ai in that match focusses fully on that escort buying you time and saving you hp on your line ships, something escorts are good at because of the +20 defence vs macros
and its a tutorial, the point of losing that escort is to learn about insubordination and hear the amazing voice acting of the commisar
but after that mission if you think you can win bringing no escorts you will get some extra renown for every point not spent, its going to cost you but it will make some profit
good luck on the supply mission vs orks xD
and escorts is just filler with 100+point ships you will usually end up with 40points extra here and there
so considering the game gives enough renown the 40 extra points you can get from not bringing small bait is not worth it
i would advise the widowmaker, the extra torps are nice and having 9k detection range or when upgraded 12.5k so that you dont need to put detection skills on your ships is amazing
but escorts dont level, they are just filler
focus on keeping your line ships alive so they can level
dont worry about failing sometimes, the game is a lot deeper then it looks and will take a while to get realy good and figure everything out
There's some good advice here, escorts have no impact if they are destroyed and are just filler.
They can be dangerous or provide decent fire support if built right however, Savage/Onsluaght swarms can be very dangerous if your un-prepared. Orks can easily field up to 20 of them in a match.
Getting the lance upgrades on the firestorm allows to do 1.5 dps vs shields at 9km, which isn't nothing.
One Youtuber named FilthyRobot had a good series of beginner's videos when the game first came out, on ship design and favors:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fe6dzDnBXN8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A18ZIMCxj3c
He also plays through most of the single-player campaign, so you can pick up a few tips by watching his gameplay. In his mission videos you can skip the first part of the recording to avoid spoiling the story-missions.
Note some of the design options he mentions may no longer be applicable since he posted these videos before a major patch to the game that changed some of the ship's abilities. But despite that most of his advice is still valid for the single-player game in its current state.
He favors torpedo boats so I mimcked most of his builds, though I went more for smaller ships than the larger ones (I never used the largest ships). Using his tips I was able to win the game on the second-hardest difficulty.
I recommend playing on the second-to-hardest difficulty. You may have to restart a few times but you'll learn a lot, as once you know what you are doing the game gets easier to play (and more rewarding IMO).

his builds and tactics are up to date and he is pretty good with imperials, not as good as he is with orks, but pretty good
probly continuing my iron man run
