This is purely my opinion, (people's preferences do vary after all), but you should try a bunch of the games since there's an interconnecting timeline, but not necessarily the exact same playstyle.

I'll refer to this series as Classic Megaman. Its the general consensus anyway.
Connection by timeline (spanning from years to centuries):
Classic series ---> X series ----> Zero series ----> ZX series ----> Legends series

*This is one categorization of the games in which humans developed robot technology, there's another category of games in which humans developed cyberspace advancement, but that's already off topic...(If you really must know, its the Battle Network and StarForce series)

Classic series has the most minimalistic story per game so far, all the other series mostly have better plot per game.......Though the Zero series is the only series with a definite ending, all the other series still have loose ends to date.

From my experience in the series, you can just play the first game in the Classic series and assume the main villain basically tries to do the same thing multiple times for later games (thats literally what Classic series is about). Try the X, Zero and ZX series..Their storylines are quite strongly related across the 3 series.

Start with Megaman's 2 normal mode. I know it sounds bizarre because you'll be skipping 1, but its a much more refined experience that should give you enough well-designed and fair challenge for a newcomer, then you'll be able to move on to 1, complete 2 on "difficult" and then the rest of the games.

The traction on megaman is heavy (which is removed in 2 and the rest of the games) making him control a little worse than he should be, and Yellow Devil WILL make you ragequit so hard you'll be disgusted looking at the series, unless you use the "pause glitch." Its rough and all over the place when it comes to challenge. 2 is much more fun.

I wonder if the movement in 1 is the same as 2 now since they remade the engine for this collection. Hopefully.

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6

(amazing that's the same number as my luggage)

They were going for not changing the experience of the original games, so the MM1 crazy quick-falls and pause glitching are there, I wouldn't expect it to control any differently than it used to.

2 and 3 are the ones most well-received for nostalgia purposes. Honestly, to a gamer who hasn't played any of them, I'd say that 4 through 6 are actually the better ones to play. The first tree games have more than a few design problems that, nonetheless, do not stop them from still being fun - they're just glaring to anyone uninitiated to the game design standards of the day.

1, 2, and 3 all have areas and/or bosses that require certain weapons with no easy way to refill bars outside of tedious farming or a game over screen, 2 having it the worst in this regard. (4 has at least one instance of this but it's much, much better controlled.)

One of the big draws of the series is slowly building up an arsenal of cool weapons as you beat bosses, but sadly most of the games don't have very well-balanced weapons. 4 probably comes out the best here in terms of giving everything some usefulness, although 2 is famous for the overpowered Metal Blade. 6, in particular, gives a surprising number of areas where the Rush Power adaptor has use that I feel should be applauded.

Regardless, 1 is by far the hardest because the design is still very rough. It's still doable with practice and understanding the stages and bosses - they all are!

As it is, come tomorrow, you're getting to play some of the most influential games of their time, and for a good price too - enjoy!
