How do I get to the stage select screen from a stage without losing my progress?

So, I'm playing Mega Man 1. I beat Cutter Man, then I accidentally clicked back into that stage from the stage select screen and only after that saved my progress. So, my save picks up at the beginning of that stage with a Cutter weapon from having beat him, but with no apparent way to get to the stage select screen without beating the level again.

Is there some way to kick out of the level back to stage select without restarting the game and losing my victory and new in-game weapon?

This is my second time beating Cutter Man today. The first time I (like an idiot) forgot to save my game. So, I went back and beat him again. Hopefully I don't have to go beat the level a third time just because I accidentally clicked into that stage again.

i think getting a gameover lets you choose to replay a level or stage select(well on a NES it did)

ah the old lazy have to game over to get back.....
So glad Maverick Hunter X made it so you can quit out of any stage even ones you haven't beaten and saving Hydoken and filled Sub tanks.
Makes replaying the game much funner.
