Why do people think Megaman 1 is hard?
I've only found two hard sections in this game:

1) CWU-01P (Wily 2 Boss)

2) The boss rush at the end of Wily 4

Why does everyone think this is the hardest Megaman game?

I remember playing Mega man 1-2 and 3 i think on NES, as a lil kid.
Now im old and fat and the games are pretty hard, not because the dificulty, but because of the style of the game (trial and error).

Compared to 2 it is phenomenally hard. 2 is practically a cakewalk in comparison, most of the Robot Masters go down pretty easily with just the Mega Buster, patterns are predictable, the Masters don't crowd the heck out of you the way they do in 1.

3 is also pretty easy up until the Break Man stages, then the levels themselves get somewhat tricky.

If you can cakewalk through the RMs of 1, then that's pretty impressive. Even after 30 years, I still struggle at times with Cut and Bomb, have no luck fighting Fire or Elec and can't even get to Guts or Ice. It's pretty hard for some of us.

Most of the robot masters in mm2 are somewhat easy buster only (except for Quick Man), but in the boss rush they are brutal. As for Cut Man and Bomb Man, those guys are easy.

If MM1 is easy for you it just means you are more skilled than most people and that you most likely consider the rest of the series to be a cakewalk.
If you know the tricks and boss patterns MM1 is really easy. The rest of the series isn't a cakewalk, but its not brutal hard either. If you want a real challenge try Mega Man Unlimited. I start with Cut Man (he is weak to the mega buster) -> Bomb Man -> Guts Man (has the worst opening screens) -> Elec Man (you can now get the magnet beam) -> Ice Man (those annoying platforms) -> Fire Man (hardest RM in the game). The Wily stages aren't that bad. In the first stage there is a glitch that makes the room with spikes and bullet bill looking things easier (it makes them unspawn and never respawn), use the magnet beam if you have trouble with those floating platform enemies (remember you can refill it at the end of that room), and remember to use the pause glitch on the fan favorite boss. On the second stage just use Elec Man's weapon. On the third stage just shoot everything that moves and save the Guts blocks for the last few bubble robot boss things (primarily use the Mega Buster). On the final stage beat the four RMs again and use Fire Storm on Wily's first form then Rolling Cutter on his second form. Remember: any weapon can be used with the pause glitch, but the Rolling Cutter and Elec Man's weapon are the most effective with it. This was the first Mega Man game I beat.

The only really hard part for MM1 compared to the others is instant death spikes and--as others have noted--lack of a password. The rest is just the difficultly of remembering boss patterns and become decently skilled at it. To that end, I definitely am worst at MM1 because I've played it the least. If I played it more, I'm certain I would be as good at is as the other MM games.

Personally, I think 3 is the hardest (out of the NES games at least). While there is a lot of bs in Megaman 1, like all the damn linear platforming with spikes or a pit below, there was always a pattern to just about everything. Well, for the robot masters that's a different story. But this is Megaman 1 we're talking about. Sure, robot masters like Fire Man have really erratic patterns, but the Mega Buster does a whopping amount of damage on it's own to bosses. It's a simple game, being the first one, and all it takes is a single play through for a newcomer getting owned to get good at it.

Yup. That was just brutal. The robot masters from Megaman 2 are actually pretty easy, but man they really hurt in Megaman 3. Even when you figure out their weaknesses, they can still be tough. Well, at least they each have like 2 weaknesses, I think lol. None of the other Megaman games have put me through as much suffering as 3 has.
If anything, Megaman 7 or 9 were probably the hardest ones.

Yeah i beat like 3 bosses without getting mad

It seems the enemies in 1-esp the bosses-do a lot more damage than in the other MM games, plus 1 is the only game in the NES series without Energy Tanks that restore all your life upon use. And maybe in part because, unless you still have an actual NES, you can't easily use Game Genie to cheat (the original mod/cheat device that started it all).

I wouldn't call Megaman 1 consistently hard. It's about Mega Man 2 hard - where more of the difficulty comes from your lack of mobility than anything. But Mega Man 1 has some real spikes in difficulty. Some bosses are a cakewalk, then you get ones like Elec and Fire that are brutal, and the same goes with stages. Easy parts, and parts that are pretty rough. Those platform enemies that seem to go in all random directions are my least favorite aspect. Who even thought those were a good idea?

I guess if you haven't played a prior Mega Man title, it can seem about average? But after playing the rest, it's just a lot harder because of less mobility and less refined mechanics.
There's also those moving platforms in Guts Man's stage and the Wily Castle bosses.
