Cannot damage Dr. Wily in Mega Man 4.

I've watched youtube videos on how to kill him and they all show mega man jumping up to hit the gem in his machine but I am never able to get my mega blast to ever shoot that high. Is anyone else having this problem? it seems ridiculous.

I had the same problem when I played MM4 on my first run, not sure if I was missing anything but I couldn't get the height from a jump to hit him either - IIRC you're meant to use Drill Bomb and detonate it yourself to hit the gem with the explosion.

Pretty sure I ended up just using Rush Coil and switching weapons in midair for that boss. You can also use the Wire if you picked that up and just stand under him but you can't beat him with just that alone.

I never knew about the Wire until now. Either way putting the lone spot to hit a boss outside of normal jump reach is unfair and would have crushed me as a 12-year old if I played this game then.

oh i see. if you use the drill bomb and detonate it yourself right before it bounces off his nose cone it will damage him. ugh

Just stay under wilys ship the first round, he will shoot out 5 shots, come around quickly and hit with the ring.

The next battle phase like "obama" mention, time your shots and press the shot button again to detonate the drill bomb.

The last phase is like Mega Man 7 but not nearly as bad, use a powered up pharoh shot and hold it underneath him.
Wily will run into it by accident, it will kill him in 4 or 5 shots, make sure you stack up 5 E tanks.

If I remember correctly a fully charged pharoah shot can be lobbed at an upward angle to easily reach the good doctor. That's the last phase of the fight. If it's an earlier phase then time your jump to be at its highest when wily's machine is at it's lowest (bobs up and down).

I remember, it was years and years later, when I saw someone say online that you can detonate Drill Bombs by pressing B again after you've fired one.

The game doesn't bother to explain this to you, at all.

You can also get an extra pharaoh (Fay-Row) charge shot if the one above megaman gets destroyed. Just keep holding the charge button, aim in one of eight directions, then release. The hippo that spits homing missiles is a great way to test and learn the weapon. The missiles are too weak to destroy the charging shot so you can get lots of drops by just positioning yourself and holding the charge button. Jump up to hit the hippo with the fully charged shot and you can shoot him with the second shot.
