The best tip I can think of is to remember that in this setting EVERYONE is a mage and magic is really, really powerful; so even your 2-handed weilding dps should be using magic to enhance thier attacks, I like cones personally for the AoE. ... Same with Barrik and Verse.
Thanks for the tip. So far no one can use magic although I've put no points into lore or anything, how do I change this?
But nowadays I use Cheat Engine to get big stat boosts. lol
From what I recall from those clean playthroughs, I think early game I used to give Landry and Ebb heavy armor and offhand shields. It tricks the AI into ignoring them, but it does slow down their spellcasting alot too.
My main character was focused on Unarmed Combat which gets pretty overpowered in time but is lackluster in the beginning. But the game's been patched plenty of times since then so that might not be true anymore.
I do know that one of the attacks you start with if you choose Unarmed Combat is a 3 hit combo that's very effective. And it works even if you use weapons.
Unarmed/Fire Magic is a good starting combo. Any elemental magic really. If anything i'd say Lightning is better, your chances to learn the Fire rune could be a long time depending on the path you choose to play so I like getting it during "Conquest of the Tiers" to start the game with it.
But if you don't really care, i'd say go Unarmed/Lightning instead. Lightning passively stuns/interrupts which can be a real clutch boost when you need it. Fire gives you DOT though which is less noticeable on higher difficulties but should help you quite nicely on Normal.
Landry with a shield is enough to have him basically ignored.
And again, I don't play uncheated anymore, so maybe it's different now. But I did at least two clean nightmare runs back in the day, relying on Unarmed and don't recall feeling like it wasn't getting the job done. And I recently saw some youtuber who did a Nightmare Solo Ironman Unarmed run from start to finish so I have to assume it still works if that dude pulled it off.
