You can be a pretty big bastard in POE as well, but storywise it might not have the scope for really embracing your own villainy that you might want.
And inevitably Planescape Torment is going to come up again. If you haven't played it -- your character is a kind of revenant, keeps coming back from the dead, looks like a zombie. Lots of undead in the game, whether or not you create them yourself. You can eventually get some significant magical powers like talking to the dead, some of the high level spells involve things like dragging your foes off to the Abyss. Summoning here is less about spellcasting than finding limited-charge summoning items, but there's some decent ones to find and the monsters are sufficiently creepy. Combat in the game isn't great, but if you were to go combat, mage is the way to go. You'll feel powerful to the point where the game is maybe a little too easy -- more like Final Fantasy-style summons than CRPG magic.
