New to CRPGs. Don't know the first thing about DnD. Is this a good starting point?
I have played and loved RPGs my whole life, but mostly AAA console Action RPGs. Never played any CRPG's. Never played DnD and I'm still not even sure what it is besides a tabletop/board game I think? I still need to look more into it. Is this a good starting point into what seems like an overwhelming world of DnD-related stuff?

It's kinda like that Warhammer 40k stuff. I don't know the first thing about that franchise either but the characters and lore look really cool! But I'm certain it would cost about a trillion dollars to own everything in that franchise! From the tabletop games, a million expansions, figurines, books, video games... Crazy!

So, thoughts on starting here? A lot of these isometric CRPGs look cool, from what little I've seen of them. They definitely seem to appeal to my love of RPGs in general. If so, what are some good guides and other resources/suggestions to diving in?

Thanks and sorry if this is a frequent question!

There are a number of Warhammer games on Steam; they're grand battle games, mostly. Tyranny is a small party CRPG wien a pretty engaging story, in which choices you make matter.

This is a great staring point for CRPGs, yes. I say that because the mechanics aren't super deep, so the basics can be latched on to easily.

If you're going for tabletop RPG simulation sort of things, then of course there's games BASED off of tabletop... Baldur's Gate (any of the 3), Planescape: Torment, and Pathfinder: Kingmaker.

If you want tabletop RPGs but not in a fantasy setting, I'd suggest the Wasteland series of games.

Almost everyone I know LOVES Divinity: Original Sin 2, so I'd also suggest that.

Lastly, if you just like RPGs of any flavor (1st person, etc.) I'd suggest Bethesda games like Skyrim and Fallout 4.

A warning: Tyranny has a lot of reading, and is played with real-time with pause, not turn-based, and set in its own universe, not part of wider universe like you'd see with DnD, Knights of the Old Republic, or Warhammer (fantasy or 40k).

Tl;DR this is a great starting point, but also consider Divinity: Original Sin 2, or Pathinder: Kingmaker.

As someone who only recently got into to CRPGs and enjoy them immensely now, my advice is to learn how the battles work as soon as you can.

It's a lot of fun because the battle systems of these games are very transparent, that is to say that you can see a breakdown of why you attack hit/missed and how the damage was computer. It's a nice change from games where such info is not available to the player.

Without understanding the battle system though, that info is just a bunch of meaningless numbers. So read a little online (took me 15 minutes or so in Pillars of Eternity for example) to get a grasp on how the numbers work. If you are a person who does not enjoy stats, this style of games may not be for you.

Most of these games offer a "story mode" too, which makes the battles very easy. This is great for folks who don't want to delve into how it all works, but I find the battles so rewarding that playing on normal is a must for me.

Also, CRPGs are plot heavy and rely on you to do a lot of reading. The plot is great and worth it for me, but if you are a person who prefers to jump into action and not do much reading, this might not be for you.

In summation, CRPGs are a ton of fun, just know they can be a little denser to get into, but are well worth it.

It's an amazing starting point because it is simple enough to understand quickly but takes some learning to master.
Not exactly true, as most of the above reviewers have forgotten where we all begann to learn it the soft way.

So for you and alike imNOTho all of beginners should startet here:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/704450/Neverwinter_Nights_Enhanced_Edition/

It is starts slow and gets sooooooooooo deep.

After that you can play Tyranny as it is a modified A/D&D set.

Anyone disagree, come :War:

Thanks for the recommendation, NWN has come up often as a suggestion for me when on Steam. The images and vids make it look like there is no group, only one character. Is that the case?
