A few questions concerning paths/factions and choices within the story
I am interested in that game but I have a few questions. I know this game isn't out yet and I know some questions will only the developer know but I want to ask anyways:

1) Factions/paths: How will they work exactly. Researching I found out that it has to do with favour for that faction how does joining them (if possible) actually work? And when do I join the faction? Will it take until the final dungeon that choosing a faction really matters or are there major changes (like different main story missoins depending on my faction) through the whole game?

2) I get that I will learn different abilities depending on the faction I help/join but will my possible companions also change? So if I like a certain character (either gameplay or personality wise) might I lose that character by joining a different faction on a second playthrough?

3) I didn't really understand that conquest prologue scenario thing. I understand that doing this will shape the world in a certain way but in what way exactly.

4) Are all options viable? Because I read a developer interview where on one hand the dev states that there are no "choose that option and you are dead" things but in the same interview he also stated that a number of false/too "good" choices might kill me. Sounds kina strange to me. I understand that some options make the game harder than others but is there a way to get "stuck" because I chose too many false options (or is there some kind of early bad ending I get?

Answering to the best of my knowlege - I have't watched most of the gameplay videos to avoid spoilers.

1. From what I've seen, in the early game there are 3 factions to be concerned about - The Disfavored and Scarlet Chorus are both part of Kyros' army, but have vastly different tactics and ideologies. Then there are the Rebels, who oppose Kyros. You should probably decide who you want to support before you start playing if you want to push the world in their favor, or you can just jump in and align with whatever appeals to you most. The major decisions you make in the game and pre-game Conquest will affect these factions in a big way - you don't have to "join" them per se, but you'll probably have to pick a side eventually if you don't want to play a "lone-ranger" Fatebinder.

2. I believe most of the companions are already aligned with their own factions, or at least harbor lingering loyalties to them. For example, Verse is a member of the Scarlet Chorus and Barik is a member of the Disfavored. Whether you can sway them away from these paths remains to be seen.

3. The Conquest prelude establishes what your character did during the initial conquest of the Tiers. This will set the game world that you enter - for example, certain factions will have a positive or negative opinion of you at the start based on your actions during the war. Certain NPC's may never appear, new ones will pop up, the landscape of certain maps will change, you will have different titles...lots of changes. This increases the value of replayability, because you won't be playing the same exact game over and over again.

4. You can "fail" the game if you do not complete the terms of the first Edict within 8 days. You get new objectives and more time after that. That's the only game-ending decision I know of so far.

Hope that helps a bit.

1. You do not choose to join a faction or not. Instead you have reputation with the fractions. You can gain Favour or Wrath. Wrath is when the faction hates you and Favour is when the fraction likes you. This means fractions will react differently to you based on which reputation you have. This also unlocks (or locks) side quests.

No matter what your reputation is, you can choose to side with any faction you want. There will be several events when you will be forced to pick a side and because of that play through different versions of a mission based on which faction you chose this time.

2. Companions have same reputation system, only its called Favour/Fear. You can make a companion hate you and unlock through this cool abilities. The abilities for Favor/Fear also vary, I believe.

This means you can side constantly with a faction your companion hates and still get benefits from this companion.

However keep in mind that if you go REALLY against their principles in some key events, they may leave the group and/or betray you.

3. Conquest (aka first ten minutes of character creation) has decisions which allow you to side with one or the other faction in series of events. The decisions that follow can wipe out towns, change political landscape and alter perception of others.

In other words, some quest hubs will change their nature pretty drastically based purely on Conquest alone. In some playthrough you will go through an abandoned town and in some it will be inhabited by people.

People also adress you by the actions you made. If you were a governor of a city, they will adress you as that. If you burned down a city, people will mention that.

4. You work for Kyros the Overlord. If you decide to side with the rebels and don't think ahead about your survival, you may logically get yourself cornered. With too few allies and too many enemies you will have a bad time. And since Kyros conquered the whole world, you won't find too many people who would willingly stand against him.

This means as an undercover rebel you would need to lie, to get many powerful friends and in some cases sacrifice the cause to save your own skin. At least, this is how I think it will be. Maybe even that is too optimistic.

I 'm sure it's not an easy path to take.
You're not some neutral lone wanderer, you're a judge Dredd working for an evil empire who actively helped raze towns etc...

Why do you want so many spoilers? I'm going in blind otherwise google is to tempting and ruins it for me :)

I'd suggest for your first playthrough to not blindly follow one path, for example side with the chorus no matter what. Try and think of what your character would do in that specific situation and you will find that you get a mix of reputation gains and losses which will create a much more interesting story dynamic, the interactions are designed for this with the factions wanting to kill one moment and enslave the other.

The game is about replayability and if you just decide to go full blown one faction fenatically you will just limit your own enjoyment in the long run.

Min maxing isnt really designed for games like this.

They mentioned that if you betray Kyros, all the Factions, and go "on your own", you will get a hard time in the Game which is great.

Trying to do good when the whole world is surrounded by Evil, is a playthrough I'm considering. Not at first tho.
Replayability in Tyranny seems to be wayyy beyond other cRPGs out there, I can't wait.

May I suggest something for you first playthrough? This is "tactic" I used in Mass Effect series.

I do whatever I feel like doing at that particular moment. You wish to chop someone's head off? Do it. You wanna save him? Do that, then. Try it, trust me you will have an excellent time - and every other playthrough will be equally interesting for you since you will do different things.

There is a problem with this "tactic": I prefer playing the good guy over playing the bad guy. Actually my character is usually a goody-two-shoes that however is still loyal to his superior if possible, something that is heavily implied (from what I've heard) is very hard to do/next to impossible. And it also sounds like this will also change what the game throws at me and I suck in this type of combat.
I am still looking forward to it but again, I don't think the playing the character I really want to play is a possibility in this game so my preferred NR. 2 is to immediatly ally with the faction I like the most. And that seem to be the rebels....but that is also hard to do.....you see my dilemma when it comes to this game and your tactic.
CelestialSlayer Nov 9, 2016 @ 10:25am
Are you a goody two shoes though? Games make me nicer than I want to be for fear of losing a mission. Feel the dark side!
KantiranRhodan Nov 9, 2016 @ 12:04pm
Eh, i actually prefer being the nice guy. You can't believe how bad some people might feel for needlessly killing a bunch of pixels...(and yes, I am sure some people would call me a goody two shoes in real live as well).
CelestialSlayer Nov 9, 2016 @ 12:07pm
You sound like a good person. Maybe you should save the universe. Play mass effect. Best rpg I've ever played.

@Inconnu

A little correction there, the deadline is Kyros' Day of Swords, not specifically 8 days after proclamation.

My next run I plan to go the anarchy route. My entire goal is to kill anybody and everybody if I have the option to attack during convo and to raise my companion fear to Max. It will be very interesting since I'm playing the diplomat this run and solving using conversation as much as possible and only fighting when there is no option.
