Turn-based combat!
I love the turn-based combat they've added to Pillars of Eternity 2. I wish they'd add it to Tyranny as well. (and PoE 1)

Turn based combat sucks. And Tyranny sort of has it, just camouflaged - that stupid delay between actions.

Real-time combat sucks. Whomever thought that was a good way to translate tabletop combat to single-player computer games was innovative but misguided.

I liked the real time combat well enough in BG/IWD/P:T/NWN/etc., although it does feel a bit more awkward here. But it still effectively is turn-based combat, with a LOT of options you don't usually see in real time combat.

I'd just like to toss in I don't really play many turn based games because I don't really like the style, I doubt I'd love Tyranny as much as I do if it was completely turn based. I put a lot of points into shortening my wait time so I could get multiple hits between an enemies single strike and the slow progression of watching myself get faster was delightful.
Jesse Dylan Feb 16, 2019 @ 10:11am
Well, you could end up with more hits per turn, or your turns might come faster. I think it's fine to have an option, as they do in PoE 2 now. The argument will last forever. I will always think real-time is trash. ;) If I wanted to play Warcraft 2, I'd play Warcraft 2. And it is no more turn-based than Warcraft 2, either.

Well, that's not really an argument, that's just a matter of preference.

First, don't play Warcraft 2, play Warcraft 3. Or Starcraft 1. Less monotonous, with factions that are actually different. But also, it kinda is more turn-based than those, because you can't issue commands while paused in those games. You CAN slow the action down to a crawl, though, which THIS game could use, but it only helps so much.

I wasn't attempting to argue, more just declare that the argument is pointless. I just remember when Baldur's Gate came out, a lot of us (after driving in a snow storm and skidding on ice to get it, in my case--although I wasn't the one driving! thanks, Mom!) were super disappointed by the combat. And then we got to hear the "it is turn-based, just real-time turn-based" argument over and over, which has never made any sense to me.

That was my argument back then, that it felt more like Warcraft 2 than D&D. I remember actually liking RTS until I realized I was horrible at it!

Yeah, I keep hearing stuff like that. Which game, though? The original, or 2, or the franchise as a whole, or what?

Yeah. Turn based combat would make me buy.

Original Sin 1 and 2 are both turn based and great games. The enhanced edition of one is great granted I haven't played all of it.
