He is very unbalanced.
He killed me 4 time, no amount of potions or preparation helped.
The first time I fought him was for 15 minutes straight. He just kept healing more and more and summoning more and more. I finally gave up once nothing was being accomplished. The other times he and his shadows 1 shot my different party members.

How I beat him. I used less well timed moves, 1 healing potion, and his shadows just floated there doing nothing. I beat him in 2 minutes, he didn't heal didn't do battle summons, barely did damage.

Why was he so easy on the 5th try?

If his shadows just did nothing, I guess they just glitched out.

As for how to beat him, IIRC he doesn't heal himself while you're attacking him. So you'd need at least one character with good enough accuracy trying to hit him.

Oh, he healed while I was attacking him multiple times. All I know is he was down to yellow, I was punching him in his face trying to use a disrupt move, he easily dodges, and finishes going to full health while staring me down.

Were you actually hitting him, or was he dodging? Archons are hard to hit. Though, I've never had any issues with him myself, I've gone through the game multiple times and I've always considered him to be the easiest archon to beat.

Maybe if you do it again and post a gameplay video, it might help OP better understand how the fight should go? I've seen a number of people who have trouble with Mark, and some of their fights may be glitched.

If you are not going anarchy, is there any way to get him to join and not fight him?

Nope. He's the draw of the Anarchist path, along with doing all 4 regions in Act II.
