Min-maxing mages post-Tales
I just figured I'd mention this little tip, as most of the information on here, Reddit, and the official forum is now out-dated.

For players who wish to play as a mage (pure or hybrid), I would recommend picking 2 NON-mage classes during character creation.

Something like Unarmed / War Mace, for example. Your stats and skill choices don't matter, you'll be respec'ing later on anyway.

You can pick up the lightning core at the Edgering Ruins (very first area) from a vendor to level your lore in combat, and/or get the fire core during conquest.

You can now respec at the first spire by recruiting a Fatebinder for 1 iron ring (expensive, but doable on your first playthrough).

When you respec, you will get back the 2 non-mage talents that you picked at creation and you can put them wherever you like.

It was always kind of a disadvantage prior to Tales from the Tiers to choose mage classes at the start, but now with respecs, you are basically always going to be 1-2 talents behind any non-mage starting build even after you respec, which is a big deal.

Of course, if you don't care about min-maxing, you can do whatever you like, but some people hate that nagging feeling of not ever being as powerful as you could be.

Hope this helps. : )

I always thought respec would be bad for the game as it creates these artificial paths (playing a "mage" with no mage backgrounds, then respeccing to add the mage ♥♥♥♥ back later on).

for melee characters respeccing is not that good:
- on character creation you can get talents like "Sunder" as starting talent
- after respec you need to buy an additional talent to get it back ("Sunder" needs 1 point in tree)

skill locking is much better ... examples:
- lock Dodge to get no exp in it until you get Arrow Shield
- lock unwanted skills with ranks from background so you don't get exp in them (for example if you selected a background only for the talent)
- lock all magic skills so you don't get unwanted exp for buffing yourself

training looks also interesting
- you don't lose unused training sessions on level up
- so it seems viable to wait until you reached the (Soft-)Level-Cap of Level 21 and then max out your desired skills with training (and potentially get more levelups)

w8, i dont understand! mages r weaker then other classes? i allways play mages and nothing else! now u tell me if i start as meele i get more talents then a mage would get? :O

i just reached the end of chapter 1 and i only got 50 gold rings (the second valuable rings) so i still hv a long way to go b4 i get 1 iron ring :/

also i dont understand the skill lock mechanic, i know that quest reward xp is distributed to all skills so it makes sence to lock skills to level a few skills faster BUT skills level too by using them, so if i use more skills i should gain more xp overall and in the end i level faster, right?

i just started the game and atm it feels like i get most xp in battles, i mean i cast heal 2 times and get 2 "healskill" level ups, same for fireball, even though i started as lightning mage and since my spells hv high cooldowns and my weapon attack doesnt do any dmg i might aswell throw a fireball and a heal from time to time, right?

or does it change later and it is better to just level a few skills?

also for people who dont want the hassle with the respecc for 1 iron ring i hv a solution https://www.reddit.com/r/TyrannyGame/comments/5cnl2j/how_to_respec_or_edit_character_stats/?st=j44rtspr&sh=7b41565c this link tells u how edit ur stat points and how to add talent points,
the next link tells u how to remove talent https://www.reddit.com/r/TyrannyGame/comments/5djdf4/how_to_respec_talents/?st=j44rnlpy&sh=539ccb20 use with caution ;D

When you create a character, picking any of the magic classes will let you start out with a spell sigil instead of having to find/buy them in the world.

Most of these can be found very early in the game, like the lightning sigil at the very first place that you start out.

Any of the other classes starts with a talent (the perk you get to choose when you level up), which are harder to come by.

This is just a way to play a mage without losing 1-2 talents in the process, but the tradeoff is having 2 non-mage talents until you get to the first spire.

It's not really too bad, since those first few fights are actually a lot harder as a pure mage, lol.

Yeah, it makes the game easier for sure.
