I would suggest if you want the "complete" experience to get the full-collection, even how lackluster the DLCs are in comparison to the base-game, they do add something to the whole experience on repeated runs. You can see my reviews of them if that's not convincing enough as I explain how and why the "expansions" are disapointing.
Once you have learned about the game that there are four core paths through the story, plan ahead early and apply appropriate role-playing choices. Decide early on which primary ally you want to choose / support the most. The Disfavored army? The Scarlet Chorus army? The rebels? One must be careful as to not miss the early option to join them. Or to stay an independent anarchist and turncoat? In case of the latter, Archon Bleden Mark will develop into becoming your primary ally/quest giver.
The second aspect that I consider important is locking of unused skills as not to waste skill points. Else, combat isn't fun. Not in NG+ mode either.
And last, the game's Reputation system adds some complexity, which isn't compatible with players who want to rush through the game on any of the harder difficulty modes.
