The 1-handed weapons skill is used when using a weapon with nothing in the offhand (i.e. duelling or fencing) or when using a shield in the offhand.
While I had beaten the game on potd with a dual wielder, it was by far a lot more difficult, than using my two-handed character, and I certainly cannot see anyone doing a solo run with it as it currently is.
However, I do understand that it once was a whole lot more useful when riposte worked with dual wielding. Not sure why they changed it to only be for one weapon with nothing in the off-hand. Just seems dual wielding was gimped.
For my main character, I actually went with dueling. Must be have been a good choice since she was at the top of the kills and other combat statistics for the entire game, except for a few areas where Lantry beat her.
Oh yeah, Verse is way better at dual wielding than the player character. Her killing spree, and lethal opening are absolutely great for dishing out butt loads of damage, and counter attacking on those missed enemy attacks. And some talents from skirmisher tree compliment her duelist talents, such as Nimble, Evasive, and Born of Blood and Fire. Passive dodge bonus, use dodge in place of parry, and immunity to magefire, fire, and bleeding is just great when in the front slashing about at enemies.
The low recovery allows you to weave attacks in between the spells and to better react to battle conditions(as you wont have a 4-5 second waiting period after an attack) while still wearing light armor.
Also, since Quickness is the main stat of dual wield, it allows you a much lower cooldown on spells and abilities in general.
Finally, Lightning and Illusion spells both have Quickness as their primary stat(which are also my prefered battlemage spells), creating further synergy.
So far it is pretty fun.
