Verse likes mages and bowmen (generally)
Barik, with his heavier weapon, goes for the heavier targets.
Some one with a SHORT bow goes for lighter targets. while a LONG bow (slower to shoot, better range) goes for the armoured ones.
And, GIVE EVERYONE MAGIC. Even a little. As soon as I put ice and lightning magic on Barik and Verse, things got so much simpler. Using the range rune for the second half of the spell means you can sneak, get in range, then more or less delete someone right from the start. Not always, but... Oh, and ice and lightning also temporarily disable the target. Not always, but enough to really help.
On that topic of magic, talk to the scribe, (if you didn't kill him) and have him teach you his healing rune. And give everyone a simple healing spell.
Back to topic: High armour pen works well on armoured foes, but does nothing against unarmoured ones. High damage weapons have damage reduced by armour, but really crush unamoured foes.
As far as I've read (those tool tips on loading screens. Very helpful) Only magic damage is really 'unresistable'. (Though it is, but not as commonly as normal damage)
But yes, upgrade Verse's weapons, but don't sell her original ones. They have super awesome enchants, and later you might be able to upgrade them (no spoilers).
Or just get an ability with Sunder, and immediately follow up with your other characters and pretty much everything melt.
Another advice is that you shouldn't focus too much on power, and instead on your hit rate and recovery rate (at least for one character). Even if the attack isn't strong, actually hitting/critting them at a reliable pace is better than hitting them slowly with a truck and keep getting grazes.
Verse - who has high accuracy - is the only character occasionally producing a string of 1-2-1-1-2--1 and so on.
