Then they shouldn't be using an ancient DX9 engine in 2021. When this game launched I was absolutely appalled at how it was optimised. "Bringing Half-Life up to modern standards" was their intention.
Yeah, they have should created a time machine to bring UE4 back into 2006, so the mod could have released on UE4.
One would've expected an engine change or two in a 15 year long project. Titanfall has shown what's possible when the Source engine is properly updated.

One would've expected an engine change or two in a 15 year long project. Titanfall has shown what's possible when the Source engine is properly updated.
They did change the engine in 2013/2014 to Source 2013, and it broke the game for ~2 years and almost completely killed the project. After the game went into EA in 2015, they had some more programming resources to make engine modifications.

But with your Titanfall comparison you're talking about a complete rewrite of the engine, which could have added several years onto the project. Respawn has a few hundred full time developers. CC is ~30 people working largely part time. A tiny team attempting a massive engine rewrite sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. Don't forget that *Valve* canned a bunch of games before HL:A because they couldn't get Source 2 where they needed it to be.
