Why you should avoid this game and play the original Half-Life

The developers of Black Mesa don't understand what made Half Life 1 such a great game thus they cut out or changed a lot of it to the point where I can hardly call it a Half-Life game.

If you want to play Half Life 1, play Half Life 1 as it was intended, if you want to play a current day single player FPS then try Metro, Borderlands, Doom, Wolfenstein, etc.

bottom line is, the game looks good in the screenshots but it's boring. It's a bad remake and a bad modern fps, it meets neither of it's promises.

If people wanna play it then it's fine. Even one of Valve employees said black mesa is good but I agree with you, the original half life is what people should play if they want to get into the series.

I already bought and played black mess, but I didn't bother to finish it because the xen chapters are unbearable, repetitive and boring. So, as someone who actually gave it a fair chance, I don't like it.

nah this game is better than the original hl1 and sven... you have to be clueless to say otherwise. they actually made zen fun which the original devs never did.

I say play Half-Life, then later on play Black Mesa.

Both are good.

I think you're being overly harsh. Of course BM isn't as well crafted as HL, but it can still be a good time. I just wish it wasn't so full of bugs... but that's also the fault of the Source engine. I would recommend HL MMod, it adds some fun animations and tweaks.

I love Black Mesa though. It's not a replacement for the original, just a really fun alternative

I'm so glad I never got this advice from anyone. bc I had tried the original half life and find it unplayable. goldsrc is terrible unless, i'm assuming, you grew up on it. Also I tried playing the original xen and to say its better than black mesa's is indefensible.

yes its horrible... same like all the people supporting a 25 year old game instead of a remaster that has improved everything. but I guess some people just like 256 textures, heavily compressed audio, and 1k poly count max...

The release of Half Life Source is what inspired Black Mesa to be made. We know Half Life Source is actually the superior way to play. Better than the original or Black Mesa.

I grew up in the time HL1 came out, but never had it growing up. I'll never understand how an OG Half-Life fan could think this. Half-Life 2 was my first Half-Life, but I did play the original later on, and it's a good game. But going back to HL1 after Black Mesa feels like going back to a rough draft. Hell, going back to Half-Life 2 after Black Mesa feels like a downgrade.

I put a lot of weight in games have some kind of interactivity with physics objects, I feel like it is all too common these days games keep that stuff to a minimum. I really like that Black
Mesa adds so much in that regard, but also I just feel that art style of early 3D shooters doesn't really hold up well. I've been playing Daikatana for the first time, that game has the same issue. It's kind of similar to JRPGs. Old SNES era age well because they have an artstyle (Doom would be the comparison) that holds up, where early 3D PS! era things with very roughly designed art styles don't age as well.

Anyway, I followed Black Mesa in the pre Steam version days. Pre base game being complete. I played each version as it came out. It's funny because this exact same thing happened with AM2R. Black Mesa is my favorite Half-Life game, and AM2R is my favorite Metroid game. They both feel good as hell to play, and much tighter than the official series they're being sequels to. Though I don't like some of the rebalances they did to Black Mesa for the steam version like all the recoil on the MP5 or nerfing the fire rate of the Pistol.

None of the modern shooters you mentioned (and I've played them all) gave me the experience Black Mesa gives me.
