Otherwise there aren't big differences to the mod version right now.
However, if you want to play Xen you should also purchase it now since the Xen update will be released for free if you already own Black Mesa.
It was also stated somewhere that the devs won't go over 20 bucks so maybe it's also save to wait until full release.
Still I won't say that for sure, since prices can always change...
But for an EA game it runs flawless as far as it goes.
I'll let someone else answer your questions regarding features etc since you're looking for customer opinions.
The promise that we would always be free was made back in 2009, when it was basically impossible for us to get our game on Steam.
When we were Greenlit in 2013, Valve approached us with an offer to go retail, a possibility which we had never even considered possible in the past.
We didn't lie or mislead anyone. Circumstances changed. As soon as we'd finalised and sorted the decision to go retail, we announced it at the end of 2013.[forums.blackmesasource.com]
The free mod is still, and will remain free. We have not gone back on our word for that.
If you read the FAQ then you know a fair bit of what we've done. This includes:
Heavily updated single player experience - The Black Mesa singleplayer experience has greatly improved from the mod release; new visuals, new voiceover, updated gameplay encounters, stability changes and more. Xen is not a part of the Steam release of Black Mesa, but it will be included as a free update to the retail title when it is ready.
Black Mesa Multiplayer - Fight with or against your friends, in two game modes (deathmatch and team deathmatch) across six iconic maps from the Half-Life universe: Bounce, Gasworks, Lambdabunker, Stalkyard, Subtransit and Undertow.
Custom Modding Tools - Use the same tools the developers used to create your own mods, modes and maps for Black Mesa and Black Mesa Multiplayer.
Fully integrated Workshop - And then share your work on the fully integrated workshop!
Complete Steam Integration - Collect trading cards, backgrounds, emoticons, achievements, and everything else you would expect out of a Steam integrated game
In terms of the singleplayer, there were loads of graphical and gameplay improvements made throughout. There are far too many to list.
Black Mesa itself is certainly worth $20 to me as it stands. If they'd have asked for it I'd have given it then. As it is, I have no doubt I'm going to want what I'll be getting, as it comes, so it will be well spent. Even if they quit now it would still be worth the money to me, retroactively for what I've already had, but of course there's more to come.
The original Half Life is too retro for me and half life source isn't much better, so I never played those. (I came a bit late to the party). I would have never known how cool any of those games were if not for this. After playing Black Mesa the first time, I went on to get Half Life 2 and its expansions and played through them all again later in Linux. (I didn't enjoy them quite as much as Black Mesa but they were good)
Anyway, money takes a lot of pressure off of people. Having money frees up minds for working on things like this. I hope they actually get some of this money after all the payoffs for licensing/distribution and I wish them success.
It's priced the same as Portal 2, which seems pretty fair to me, as it's even newer. Other newer Source Engine games tend to be around $15 - $20
After reading all your comments I've decided to a wait a little. I don't have any interest in multiplayer but I might get the game at some point, maybe if it goes a bit cheaper. If the entire game was £15 (including when Xen is out I'll totally buy it at full price. But I'll definitely get it at some point.
Thanks again.
Just to be clear, the entire game is £15/$20. That's the idea behind Early Access: the full, final release game is included with your purchase.
"If you've loved Half-Life 2 and all it's runty children so far then you'll love this installment because it's pretty much more of the same."
Compare to the free version this game looks better, works smother (only the loading speed is kinda slower), you can play multiplayer and the Soundtrack will blow your mind to shreds (I am still lisening it on my phone when I am on bike tripps, becouse it is so damn good :D).
The only downside (next too slow loading) is the fact that it is Early Access and for me it is kinda uncomfortable, since they already have my money and they can leave the game unfinished and I cant do anything about it. You know, classic Early Access gambit ^^
Could anyone do a side by side comparison, or does that exist anywhere?
Thanks!
