On the other hand, it is kind of misleading that the team modeled water down there so as a player you think you can survive jumping down there. Later in the game the player has no problem jumping down from such heights into water and survive it. In the original it was just a black abyss so you knew you weren't supposed to jump down.
IDK, look at it in the context of Gordon becoming more experienced by the time you encounter survivable falls like that later. I mean, IRL a fall like that would more than likely get you killed - Especially with all that debris in the water.
Before you blast me away tho, It's just that why does it have to be 2 buttons? The fact that practically ALL jumps in the game require crouch jump, then that makes normal jump useless...then why not just make normal jump crouch jump?
There are puzzles long before this that depend on it.
are you calling valve a bad developer? crouch jump is in all valve games.
