What happened to this game?

I have played Black Mesa since it was first released as a free mod in 2012. I have played it countless times and I never had a single issue with this game. I even managed to play and finished on an old, crappy laptop that is barely good enough to run Microsoft Office programs.

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten around to playing it again since the Xen levels came out. That's why I wanted to start it again now and play through it from beginning to end. And I just can't believe how many issues I had with this game now.

Weapon selection was broken, until I switched out my headset. It constantly froze when I changed something in the settings. It crashed reguarly.
At least these issues were solved when I changed the game's version to the 1.0 version.

But the biggest problem I had was with the lighting. The flashlight didn't work and the overall game was so dark, it was almost unplayable.
By now I have these issues solved by editing the autoexec file.

It may not sound that bad since I was able to solve all of this on my own. But I still got pretty angry, since I can't remember the last time I had major issues with a Source Engine game and I played older versions of this game on the same PC with no problems.

And I'm wondering now...what did they change in the game so that it has these issues now? I know it recieved some sort of Definitive Edition. But since, like I said, I have played older versions of it on this exact PC with no issues, I can't imagine they changed just some small things.
I wouldn't say anything if they had switched this game to Source 2, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

game runs without a single bug with 60fps all the time on my GTX 1050 lmao, so the game is alright. It's your PC that's the problem.

Explains why the lighting is all messed up on the Steam Deck. The flashlight wouldn't work when I pulled out the pistol in Office Complex.
