Eh, one might argue that because it's latched way up on the ceiling, it doesn't have to worry much about blunt force trauma. It's about as practical as beating a light fixture on the ceiling of a Wal-Mart.
Either way, it's just one of those little gameplay tricks. A lot of gamers who get snared by Barnacles pull out their guns and start firing like crazy, but those who are aware of the trick just patiently wait for the right time to club it with the Crowbar. It's not like there's no risk, since IIRC a Barnacle is more-or-less an instant kill to the player if they do it wrong.
I think previous incarnations of barnacle used to do a moderate amount of damage on the first 'bite' and the second 'bite' was death. I assumed this was the case in BM. But I recently tried getting a barnacle to kill me and it only did about 15 damage per bite. Felt like an age until dying.
"Oh, no! You're stuck!"
(gurgles) "Don't worry, I have a crow-" (gets eaten alive by barnacle just as Gordon shows up.)
Ah, well, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense either.
Guess we better rely on the mod then. xD
