The 7.1 sound mix in the game is incredible
IMO using an Sound Blaster X3 Super-XFi settings. The 7.1 sound mix is fantastic. I can hear shell casing clearly "fall" to the side of me and behind me if I'm shooting and running. The ambient sounds really scale well to 3D sound. Overall, I've really blown away but the sound design.

Agree. I noticed this too. Weirdly enough "Headphone" mod doesnt seem to have this stuff. Definitely worth playing this in 7.1.

HL games on the source engine always have incredible surround sound. Half Life 2 had amazing 5.1

Normally headphone mode in most games only outputs a stereo soundscape.

Not sure if these idiots are talking about genuine 7.1 surround sound speakers or just the nonsense 'virtualized surround sound' software you find on many 'gaming' headphones these days.

Virtualization. This is one of the better titles for it on my X3 (which simulates a 7.1 speaker setup). The sense of 3D space and being able to pinpoint enemies and ambient effects (including in Xen) are excellent.

I'm running a GSX 1200 Pro and it virtualizes 7.1 surround sound on my open back Sennheiser GSP 500 stereo headset really well. It sounds and feels so immersive.

Hopeless. Keep telling yourself that your 2.0 setup sounds like 7.1 and not just 2.0 with noise emulation added to an otherwise clear audio channel. If all you have is 2.0 you're better off using a clear stereo signal with no software layer between you and the source. You fell for a marketing gimmick. 7.1 sound in your regular stereo headset! Yeah, right.

It's not software virtualization. It's hardware virtualization.

Yeah whatever. Enjoy your '7.1 sound' out of your stereo headphones LOL shows what 'gamers' know about audio
