Who else missed leeches?

I can't say I really miss 'em. There are enough enemies/hazards that can reach you underwater. Leeches would only add to the frustration by slowing you down while everything else finishes you off (and if you don't die in the deeper areas, you drown anyways because the leeches won't let you reach the surface in time).

I remember in the original Half-Life an area where it was a section I had to work under a mechanical gear with leeches while on low HP. If the leeches didn't kill me straight away, them slowing me down enough to get crushed by the gear was annoying.

Yeah it annoyed me that they removed them, there is a mod that adds them back in but in their HL2 form so they can't be killed. It's on the workshop somewhere.

I remember playing Half-Life Uplink for the first time back in 1999, it arrived on one of my PC Gamer demo discs, and it was the coolest thing to step on cockroaches and hear that satisfying squish.

Very small roaches exist,but there're like particles. You cannot kill them.They're just a static part of the environment.

And I don't understand why you miss them. Even though they are used to block areas, Valve still added them to places we need to get to and slow us down.

I noticed the leeches missing too but they frustrated more than added to tension in the original game I think. The only other thing I noticed was your flashlight no longer has a limited battery. Finished the last achievement today so am now going back to Half Life 2 to do the last couple I never did on that game.
